Default Friend kills a cougar

Buddy of mine got back from deer hunting the upper Deschutes around Davis lake. He and his kid were pushing through the trees when a doe walked about 30 feet infront of him. He stopped to watch the deer when out of nowhere a cougar appeared, trailing the deer. Cougar stops and turns torward my friend. Cougar takes 2 steps toward my friend to stare him down. He said the cougar was within 30 feet. He racks around in his 7mm and fires only to find out his safety is on. Safety off, fires, cougar was dead before it hit the ground. Fish and wildlife said it was 6.5 feet long, 2.5 years old. Friend told me that even though he had a gun he was still pretty scared to run face to face with one of these animals. I know what he means. I ran into one in the Chesnimus unit, hunting deer with my boy.

Those cats definitely take down more than their share of deer and elk. The more that go down and stay down the better.

Had one drop out of a tree right onto the game trail I was on... Landed 20 ft in front of me, crouched and hissed with a mouth full of meat tearing teeth... I was terrified even packin a 30-06!!! Luckily I kept my composure and he died of lead poisoning right there on the trail... that was 10 years ago and thank god I have not come that close to another since....

A buddy of mine has killed two cougars this year. The first one he spotted sleeping on a rock and the second jumped out of the bushes 10 feet in front of him. The second one; he happen to walk next to it's kill and it was bent on defending it, but the cougar lost. He said that cat had 4 dead deer in about a 100' square area.

Within the last 10 days I know of three of them biting the dust in the sled springs unit. Two by a coyote trapper and one by a hunter.

My brother can add to the dead cougar population. From the story he tells me there were two of them. He could only get a shot off at one of them. It was to close to dark for him to go after the one he knew he hit. He went back to my folks place charged up the battery powered spot light to go down and look for it. After about 10 minutes of following the blood trail they found it. Desolation unit Cougar dead. Also know of two dead bears in the Desolation unit as well.
