Trout Bait
Has anyone tried Nitro Dough Trout Bait? I'm curious how it compares to Powerbait if anyone knows.

Re: Trout Bait
I was using power bait in a coastal lake a couple years ago and knocking the fish dead (not literally, I catch and release most trout). I changed over to the Nitro bait and not a thing. I had purchased 3 or 4 jars and tried everyone of them with no luck. Tried it on other lakes without a hit. Haven't tried it since.

Re: Trout Bait
I have found some on clearance that worked for me. I have tested it against regular powerbait and results are if fish are biting, they will bite this too. I haven't out fished anyone yet using this bait unlike the original powerbait. just my

Dave, you know I love Gulp. It has caught me a lotta trout this year. I was asking for my dad, who was shopping Cabela's and noticed the Nitro was almost $4 cheaper than Gulp. He had asked me if I tried it, and since I had never heard of it I thought I would ask the knowledgable ifish people about it. It sounds like ifish people like Powerbait the best. I like Gulp best, but one big problem I am seeing is that it is so hard to find. Do you know if if is going to become more available in the stores?

Re: Trout Bait
Bi-Mart, Joe's, Fisherman's, and Fred Meyer should all have good supplies of it, and they can order things that you don't see there. Otherwise, maybe checking with the local small shops who carry it might get you better results as far as being able to order specific items. They do tend to be more willing to do special orders like this.
Truthfully, Gulp! has not caught on in Oregon as well as it has in California for trout. Those guys down there love the stuff, and do very well do the slow cast and retrieve types of presentations. With Gulp! being slow to catch on, some stores are hesitant to dedicate shelf space to it. The best thing that you can do to fix that is to ask the department manager to carry the Gulp! products that you want them to, and report back when you have success. Those types of things will bring the product in, because they want to carry stuff that works.

Re: Trout Bait
Thank you everyone for your input. It looks like everyone agrees it is best to stick with Powerbait. And their new Gulp product is great too.

Question for ya: are you trying to catch people, or fish? It's not formulated to trigger a bite based on it smelling like something that they normally eat (remember: trout don't normally eat cheese or garlic, though just mentioning it gives me dinner ideas). It's formulated to trigger the very feeding mechanism that's hardwired in their brain. THAT is what makes it work.
Interesting factoid: the different scents that the Gulp! ALIVE products are scented with are not done for the fish. They have no documented effect on the fish. They are done for the anglers similar to yourself who believe that the product needs to smell like something that they know in order for them to work.
Now ya know.

Re: Trout Bait
Dave, I have a problem with using any of the garlic scent because I always start craving lasagna & french bread. Actually, when my husband wanted to try garlic scent I could not understand why. I could not imagine a trout wanting garlic. Well, I broke down and tried some garlic and ended up catching my first smallmouth (16"). But of course I am not sure if it was the garlic or the Gulp corn that the bass liked. As for powerbait & gulp, I have smelled them & always wondered why the fish would be attracked to them. They don't smell like you think they might. Maybe it is mostly color? And maybe the glitter in some of the dough baits like Gulp?

Re: Trout Bait
You make craving garlic foods sound like it's a bad thing.

The only time it's a bad thing is when your sitting there on the boat, smelling that garlic bait & dreaming about hot sourdough bread with garlic, and all you have for lunch is a cold sandwich.
