Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
Sorry to say - this is only the leading edge. There will also be those who lash out at others and turn to crime as an answer.

That's normal. The economy takes a dip and crime goes up.

I'm not sure I consider some of those things "crime." Yeah, the guy offing his family, and then himself, is a crime, but the 90 year old shooting herself rather than get evicted? That may be illegal, maybe, but it's not a crime. The fact that Fannie Mae excused her mortgage because of that action is a crime. Why not before? What kind of lesson is that for the rest of us? Self-inflicted non-lethal gunshot wounds can be used as collateral for the remainder of our mortgages? Hmmm. Copycat is written all over that one.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
Geez! And we're no where near the calamity that included 13% mortgage rates, 9% unemployment rates and 13% inflation rates from the 1970's. America has gone soft. Looks like these people want someone else to be incharge of thier lives. It's a shame for the innocent families and children of these people.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
I think susicide is a lot more common than most of us would suspect. Tough times, fragile people and the press gets a story to help build hysteria. It breaks up the Ebola flesh eating bacteria stories a little.
I can remember when a young neighbor of mind commited suicide. I spoke to a fireman buddy about it. Not so uncommon they see a lot of them. Didnt know that before.
More bad stuff ahead I am sure.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
This is sad indeed.
As for crime going up while the economy goes down. I have to agree. My wife is an attorny in Beaverton. Business is boombing. Criminal cases are on the rise. The sad truth is that elderly are willing to steal for medications, parents are willing to steal food for there children. Desperate times some times lead people down the wrong path.
The common criminal is still there as well and on the rise. Those are the ones who steal to feed drug habits or alcohol addictions.
As people's stress increases many tend to add fuel to the fire by drinking. Thise leads to poor choices and confrentations that lead to physical viloance.
People were already strapped by the fuel crunch. Add in rising food costs and a rise in utilities and people are hitting there breaking points.
Not to mention loss of jobs. Dont get me started there. That another can of worms...
I hope this election will bring change most Americans desperatley need.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
I worked at a funeral home during black monday in the 80's -We had a rash of business in Tacoma when the markets crashed. I think with todays finance it all mentality the perverbeal mud will hit the fans in 60 to 90 days from last week. It will take people a little longer to realize they lost it all(retirement-savings)or the company they work for can't get its loan for pay roll, or the people who owe you are not going to pay ever. Maybe now I can convince my wife we need to move to alaska to a cabin on a river and live off the land(fishin and huntin) for a few years till this blows over.

So is it Collateral dammage? how about causualties of war? I don't think you can call suicide a crime either, but killing your whole family is. Our economy is in a mess for sure, I expect crime, suicide, drug use, spouse/child beatings, & plain mean behavior to go up as well.

Do you think anybody that looses their home cares about stats? Or anybody about to commit suicide, cares who else they hurt?, sad situation, that is going to get worse, It's been said, the higher you fly the further you fall, I hope it's a soft landing.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
My neighbor blew her head off about a week ago.
right as the market started to take a dive. Not sure if it was what pushed her over the edge.
It is a shame.

Some "interesting" use of language to express our collective thoughts on these terrible times we are living through.

Yeah, that is a shame. Makes a person want to go out and talk to their neighbors to get a feel for the situation. Many times these things look a little better if we know we aren't alone, and that there are people out there with whom to talk. Church does that for some, bars for others. Just gotta find your fencepost and start talking.

Stress also causes a lot of health problems. Heart attacks, strokes, ect. Be interesting to monitor ER admissions for the next few months.

Re: Economy Pushing People Over the Edge
I think people all need some perspective. (Almost?) Nobody in this country starves to death or doesn't have a roof over their head if they are willing to accept the help that is available, through charity and government.
It's only money and things. Take those away, they can be replaced.

She never would come outside, totally shut herself off to the rest of the worlld ... I have lived here since 1997 and only had a word with her 1 time.
She had folks checking on her, but apparently she was not able to keep the boat afloat.
It is tragic.

doesn't anyone remember things under Carter? Take gas rationing. You could only get a tank a week based on if your car lic plate ended in even or odd numbers? food bank ration chits etc... Things had been a lot worse then they are right now. What must it have been like for those that lived through the great depression era? They didn't have all the financial aid thats avaliable today i.e. WIC's and so on. Ask your grand parents how they made it through then follow their lead. Many people are just living way past their means and thats why they are in trouble now. to much bling bling
