Fishy clothes
O.K. Dogs...who has a good solution for getting the stink out of fishing clothes when you was them? I have tried baking soda, soaking them, washing them twice, lemon bleech, I can't seem to get the smell out! Now the closet is taking on a distinct odor that should be on the boat only! The wife is talkin' air fresheners in the closet to counter act the fish smell. I am sitting at work as I type and can smell it on my pants! HELP! Tell me there is hope and a solution. If I don't find one, I can see a new "residence" for me in the garage, with my stinking clothes.

Re: Fishy clothes
Hey Dave,
You might try some hunter's laundry detergent. As a lifelong bowhunter, I've used these detergents ALOT. There are several different kinds, but I would bet just about any will do the trick. Any large department store should have them. GI Joe's in Albany always had some, especially this time of year. You could run out to John Stone's archery shop East of Lebanon. I'm sure he'll have some.
The stuff really works well. You might want to do a good pre-soak.
Let me know how it works...
BTW, it was good meeting you last week in Depoe Bay. I'd have liked to help you folks with the carking but I was living out of a suitcase for the week and that very smell you're talking about was the last thing I needed.

Re: Fishy clothes
OK. This one's a long shot. I've heard that tomato juice is the only thing that gets out skunk scent, so maybe it works for fish stink too? I really dont know. I've never been that bad.
Hey, I love the smell of fish slime in the morning. It smells like... victory!

Re: Fishy clothes
Hey Tideripper,
I know from first-hand experience that tomato juice does remove skunk spray from a dog (well, it removes most of it)
I also know from first-hand experience that when you lather your dog up w/tomato juice, it also brings in every yellow-jacket in the county.

Re: Fishy clothes
Try adding some borax to the wash. It has helped out my fish and bait stink in the past.

Re: Fishy clothes
The girls that own the Ilwaco Laundry center have some stuff that they use to wash commercial albacore fishermen's clothes in that gets rid of the smell,,,,I'll ask them what it is,,,,,,,,They have a very lucrative business. They go right down on the docks and pick up the guy's laundry, bring it back all washed and ironed.

Re: Fishy clothes
My wife has tried them all, and she's came to the conclusion that TUNA BLOOD does not come out. It will always have that hint of TUNA. ANd if you mix with other clothes in the wash, it will ruin them to.
So she haas made me have a TUNA drawer. With Tuna stained clothes, socks, thermals, and dry suit. Strickly for tuna.
Anyway I'll be checking back to see if there is any new witch's brew that works!

Re: Fishy clothes
Dave I usually wash the clothes first thing when I get home with hot woter. The sooner the better. I also set it one two rinses. If they still have some smell I will redo them right away and throw in a cup of oxy clean too. It has always worked. Those overalls I wore have had about ten years of fish stink on them. My wife won't wash my fish clothes!
As far as skunk smell goes I have found that a woman's ****** or vinegar works better than tomatoe juice. Washing with soap after the vinegar treatment removes the skunk oil.

Re: Fishy clothes
Stopped at the Laundramat today, and asked the ladies what they were using. It comes in a little bottle that would last a long time as you only use 3 drops per load of laundry. She said that if you use any more than 3 drops, it'll make your clothes smell like bubblegum. A bottle of the stuff is $2. They're open 6 days a week, just north of the Portside Cafe in Ilwaco

Re: Fishy clothes
Too funny- I noticed this morning (after I got to work  ) that I had put on my nice dark blue almost newest pair of levi's that I made the mistake of wearing on a Tuna run last year.
Hey- whats that dark red stain on my thighs there? Almost a year and they still have it. At least they don't stink (too much)!
Deepslayer - Nope just not even goin' there!

Re: Fishy clothes
Yo Slugranch, you think those girls could part with a brand name. Long ways to drive for a two dollar bottle of bubbleliscious.
I hope it's not to harsh to bath in because it took three days get the stink off myself.

Re: Fishy clothes
I'm gonna go out on a limb here. That bubble gum is probably a masking scent, and the main ingredient is formaldihyde.

Re: Fishy clothes
I'll get a name,,,,,,,,,,also was talking to a commercial albacore fisherman, and he said to put the clothes in the washer with the regular soap, bleach, fabric softener and then pour a can of Coca Cola in at the beginning. He swears this works. I've heard of doing it in greasy coveralls etc., so you might give it a try,,,,,,,

Re: Fishy clothes
Stink is one thing, but how do you get the blood out?!
Anyway, I've tried a number of things with varying success.
Here's what I do:
1) I have designated fishing clothes.
2) I have a designated duffle for my fishing clothes.
3) I wash the fishing clothes only with other fishing clothes... NEVER with anything non-fishing related
4) when done, I pack them back into the designated fishing duffle.
The very best bet is to ensure that you keep the post-fishing clothes WET. Yes, that's right... do NOT dry them and then expect to get anything out of them.
Then I soak them in 2x the detergent normally used & a healthy dose of clorox 2 (unless the articles are black or other dark colors)
Pre-treatment with a pet odor/stain remover called "Simple Solution" that can be obtained from PetCo is pretty effective (follow the directions on the bottle)
After soaking a good long time, I finally run the wash through, allowing the rinse cycle to run and then run them through a second wash/rinse cycle with about half of the normal detergent. A second rinse is sometimes needed.
I've tried simple green and baking soda and all kinds of things. I'll say it again, once the clothing has dried out, it's perma smell/stain.

Wear the Red with PRIDE! You suppose there's a reason the Albi flags are Red on White?
Maybe we could market this stuff. Red dye #Tuna?

Re: Fishy clothes
Cept it doesn't stay red, Mel. I love when people ask, why is that shirt green. And what is that funky smell? I think if you wash the clothes within 24 hours of contamination, twice, with commercial color safe bleach detergent, it comes out OK. Still fishing clothes, but no lasting funky smell.

Blood stains can be taken out by pre-soaking the affected areas with buttermilk

Re: Fishy clothes
Don't want to sound like a commercial, but soaking in Oxi clean or the Costco version of it will get out the blood stains and adding some vanilla extract to the rinse cycle will help kill whats left of the smell. Sure wish I had this stuff when I worked in Alaska.
