Default Calling for Deer

Hey guys~

Curious how many of you have had luck calling in deer during deer season. I was out last weekend with my wife and mother in law and I was trying a doe bleat for the first time. I didn't have anything get real close but did have something making some noise off in the distance. I waited for quite a while but nothing panned out. I got back in the rig and started making my way back up the road. I rounded a corner and saw a coyote in the road. Question is this...Do you have much success calling in big game with calls or more along the line of coyotes, etc. I hunt the coastal area between Corvallis and the coast. This is the first year I have tried calls. Thought I would try something new this year...

I was a disbeliever until the early 90's when my buddy called in a beautiful buck in the coast range. I am a firm believer in certain calls, we have taken quite a few deer with them. I always have one for blacktails with me now, they work.

Rattling and calling work great during the late season for blacktails. I have had sucess using both. I hold out until the last week of Oct. before starting. That is just me. Tree stand or covering ground as fast as a slug is what I would be doing now.

I was curious too, as I've been calling varmints for decades, it seems. It's nice to know that they can also bring in something tasty.

I am a firm believer in calls. I have used doe bleats and a buck grunt successfully and also called in a doe for my step son Trevor using a fawn in distress call.

They are not the end all to harvesting a Blacktail, but they do work some times.

I just watched a show on the Outdoor Channel and they were saying a deer has about as good a hearing as humans, so you need to get an idea how far sound travels in your area and call accordingly.

Rattling definately works too. Chances are that you will call in more animals than you realize. Most hunters don't hear a deer come in and the hunter moves to much and the deer just sneak off.

Good luck.

I agree fully. I was hunting in the snow last year and haveing only seen one buck come in I was so focussed on him that I didnt realize that two other deer had snuck in behind me to within twenty yards of my stand. I wouldnt have even known this if I wouldnt have seen the fresh tracks when I finally got down.

I use dow bleats all the time when out hunting. I used one just today on a reprod from 06 and got 2 deer to come into the area i was in. I have learned the hard way that if you move to much odds are that deer will just up and go without you knowing giving the hunters above or below you better chance to see them move since you bust them up or down.

thanks for the info guys. Now my next question is this...I went to Joes and bought a call for 10 or 11 dollars. On the back it says how to use it so I've been practicing with it. Do you have recommendations on what to use or do they all pretty much do the same thing. Didn't know if there's a difference from one to the next. I was going to pick up a buck grunt but wanted to try the doe bleat first. thanks

I thought their numbers where unlisted.

I have given calling a try but need a lot more practice.
