Default Salty Pup's Newport Salmon Redemption 7/12

Put in at Newport and went to take a look see at the bar around 6:00 A.M. Even with the huge tide swing the bar was mild so we proceeded west to take on the salmon. I was amazed at how much the water temp had changed since Tuesday. We hit 52 degrees at 150 feet so I shut her down and started trolling. The ocean conditions were awesome with small greasy swells. Within 15 minutes we were hooked up. We filtered through 8 nates before I had boat limits of nice 8 to 9 pound silvers. I had a 3.5 inch silver coyote spoon behind a large fish flash that was spanking them. My left over herring from last trip soaked in rock salt fished really well also.

We picked up and ran 30 MPH to the second green can and headed south for some bass. We put some of them in the box and decided to call it a day. We were on the road by noon. It was a great day today on the pond. Nice to meet you Spoiled Daddy. Sorry your buddy got a little

Can't wait till next trip

WTG Tacklebuster!
I love the silvers and chinooks. Tuna is fabulous but salmon is still the first love of the sea. Did you see any chinook? It sounds like the silvers are getting some shoulders on them...can't wait for the August fish! Congratulations on a great day.

WP- I saw one nook at the ramp and heard of a couple others that were caught. The bite was fierce this morning but shut down a little after nine.

Whoops! Didn't catch that the first time around.

A silver coyote. Never tried that one.

I sure am fond of that chartreuse/fishscale.

Might have to pick me up one of those silver spoons and give 'em a try.

Dan- It's silver but it also has the fish scale pattern on one side. I smeared a little sardine gel on her for good measure. The spoon outfished the bait two to one. Those silvers sure are putting on some weight. I have never fished out of Depoe but am wanting to give it a shot Friday or Saturday. I got an open seat in exchange for a little bottom fish 101 and instruction on threading the needle out of the rocks both ways. You interested?

Dan doesnt lie... try the Chartruse one... Chartruse fishscale on one side and silver on the other... outfished the straight silver like 4-1 two Saturdays ago.

Way to go Tacklebuster! My brother and I hit Newport for the first time today, but we didn't cross until 8:00. Didn't want to take any chances crossing on a big tide exchange, being our first time there. Looks like you called it right by going early. Wish we had. Only got two Coho but they were nice - 7.5 and 8.5 lbs. Our 18' Explorer got blown off by 12:30. Glad we quit when we did. Did you see what the winds were doing there by 1:00? 25mph with 35mph gusts at the jetty. No bottom fishing for us. Have you been out to the CR this year? We were last week and did pretty good but the fish were smaller. Check out my post earlier:

Tacklebuster,

Thanks for coming up and introducing yourself! Glad you had a good day. My rookie partner slept after he got in for about 3 hours after getting in the boat. We ended up with just the one silver and had to filter thru 9 before we got one without a fin. We did end up with 9 large hard crab from the pots we spred out on the south side of the south jetty before we headed out. Dinner at our house was really good tonight.

We caught all the fish on a orange/silver 3.5 inch Coyote spoon and a pearl finished hoochie on the 2nd rod.

Glad everyone made it back in before the unpredicted hard winds started blowing!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Well sure TB! Obviously talking a week from now.

I'm pretty sure I met you opening of coho when I went out with Brad. You were out with Captain Kujo or Kim.

You want to do it then let's invite skipper, UG, love2fish, Martin85, Cirhossis and a few others if they are free and can get over the tunaholics thing for a day.

Depoe is a easy and great place to go out of for the day.

Just ask some of the above aforementioned.

Dan- Let's throw out an open invitation and invite anyone that can make it. I met you briefly opening day for coho after a hali trip on the Black Rocket. Put something together for Friday or Saturday, sounds fun to me

Capt Kujo- We swung by Depoe on the way back hoping to catch you by the docks but I guess you guys were still out hammering tuna. I am dry docked till Friday or Saturday so let's hook up then or do the shipping thing. Let me know what you want to do bro. Congrats on the tuna and that's one nice nook Lyn cought out of PC

Good job on the combo trip Tacklebuster!!

As for this next week. I'd be available to make a Salmon run out of Depoe for Friday probably, but only for the morning bite. Have a meeting at work friday at 12:30 I really need to attend.

Saturday and Sunday I'm running Tuna both days for 2 other groups of friends so will be heavily tied up both those days.
