Default New Yamaha Motor Mounted Above Transom

Geez, this is a weird one.

I went in to pick up my Koffler Bay-Bee yesterday that had my new T-60 Yamaha installed on my old boat. Apparently the new outboard is either two inches longer than my old long-shaft Yamaha, or the rigger felt it was more optimum to have the prop higher in the water column. When they rigged the new motor they bolted it onto the transom, about 2 inches above the top of the transom! No weight is actually hanging on the motor brackets, just four beefy stainless steel bolts.

Wonder if I should have them take the motor off go back down to Eugene and have Joe Koffler weld up the entire stepped-down section of the transom to bring it up 2 inches so that it actually supports the motor weight?

Anyone had experience with a motor mounted like this? Really appreciate any thoughts here.

Lots of folks who run sleds with cutout transoms have this kind of arrangement. There is no real structural issue with this. the only thing that comes to mind is that some folks like to have the transom full height all the way across to keep following seas out of the boat and when backing into swell this prevents that much more water from splashing in...

I don't know if that answered your ?'s but I hope it helped...

I had to have a piece built up to handle a problem like this one time. They took a piece of heavy aluminum sheet and bent and welded the top into a rectangle that fit the space between the top of the transom and the motor bracket. They left enough of the straight stock so that it extended down the transom as was bolted to the transom along with the motor. This allowed the weight of the motor to rest on the transom instead of the bolts.

Thanks Bait Boy,

Always running props not pumps, I've never looked that closely. The pros that rigged my boat didn't act surprised, in fact didn't even find it worth mentioning when I picked up my boat.

I have a big-old splash well in the back so that extra couple inches probably aren't a biog deal. But I did think of the "following sea"!

Thanks for your comments,

MrFish

I have a couple outboards mounted this way, a 90 Merc and, currently, a 175 Merc, both were mounted 1" or so above the transom. I have had no problems with this arrangement.
