Default Upland Bird

So...anybody have any tips for getting some upland game bird hunting in?
I haven't been out for chukars, grouse, or pheasants in forever. I got a wild hair this last weekend and talked a buddy into making a road trip east this friday - sunday.
I don't know where to start, but we are going to give it a try. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. PM me if you have any ideas you would like to share. We are thinking about anywhere between Grass Valley and Halfway.

Chukar and possibly Hungarian Partridge numbers are way down this year. Hunting will be tough especially around Halfway and any of the Oregon/Idaho border area. Even with this poor report, you and the dog still need to be out there trying.

Farther west around Condon might be a brighter prospect. I haven't hunted there for two years but it was good when I did. See photo.

Forget pheasants in Oregon. Ya gotta know someone and be well connected. Yes you can find a few but you need to be willing to work real hard for them. I prefer going to the Dakotas....see photo..

If you want to give upland a shot than I would recommend going to a perserve. Really that's not a "bad" thing. You get into birds, lots of shooting and frankly if you do it only 2 or 3 weekends a year...it is allot cheaper than wild birds. Something to think about.

Now those are MY kind of dogs, dogzilla. Very nice photos. There were a couple limits of grouse in the Cascades during September but I haven't been up there for a couple weeks. Mountain quail are VERY scarce.
