Default Handline, mono lb test

Last week I tied up some handlines in haste expecting to get out the next day or so. Had a family medical issue so fishing didn't happen. Knowing I didn't have time to go out of town for the right stuff, I tied up two lines with 100lb mono. Am I gonna bust fish off right away or will they suffice? I did use 31" bungies so at least I will have a little more spring. Also, has anyone reported improved results with flourocarbon as compared to regular mono??

From what I've seen, 120 is minimum with 200 more standard. You planning on gaffing or tossing the fish onboard? That could make a difference.

Salmonator- biggest problem is going to be gripping that slick mono. (if they don't snap that 100 lb when they hit). You'll have a heck of a time hanging on. I woulda picked up some parachute chord (cheap/stretchy and readily avail) if I didn't have the Tuna cord avail.

Watch out you don't lose a finger getting that mono wound up on a big one. Could really hurt.

Ps- ya know- I don't know what lb test that tuna cord is, it's #36 nylon, it appears to be about 400 from the diameter but I wanna say it's 200. I run 180 lb leader on any hand line lures by the way. I'll drop down with the rods.

actually I used some 1/8" fairly stiff cord for the main, then 6-8' of the mono.

Oh- D-OH! Sounded from the post like you made the whole thing out of mono. Watch the tooth marks after every fish, if that 100 leader isn't nicked it should hold (maybe). Rememember, 30 lb fish going 20 miles an hour when they hit!

Salmonator - Where are you? I have some handlines made up that I will not need until the boat is ready. I would loan them to you until then. Ya break 'em, ya bought 'em.

The cord is 200lb and a spool is 400'.

Crabbait, thanks for the offer but I'm in Albany and won't be making it up to your area before I head out to sea (hopefully tues and wed). If I end up snapping off a tuner or two I'll just switch to all rod and reel until I get the right mono. Thanks for all the replys...
