Nephews first buck
I took my nephew out last weekend in hopes of getting him his first big game animal ever. The weather didn't help us out much, so it was a bust to say the least. He said that he wanted to give it another shot this weekend, so on sat. morning we headed to the spot that i usually go. There was about 2-3 inches of snow and it seemed that were going to have a good day. We were into elk 15 minutes into the walk, so that was cool to see. We made a few more morning hunts and saw 4 does. On the way up to see some friends, we stopped at another gate for yet another walk. We had made it about 1 mile when i spotted an elk on a side hill about 200 yards across a canyon, or should i say it spotted us. Pulled out my mouth reed and gave a couple of cow calls...nothing. Decided to try a short bugle...the elk busted out of there and thats when i relized that it was a very nice 6x6. That was really cool to see and my nephew had never even seen a elk in the wild. That was it for that hunt, so we decided to get to my friends camp and take a nap.
Finally, at around 5:30, we headed out for 1 last hunt for the day. We went to an area that i had hunted along time ago but it had grown up and you couldn't see more that 20 yards. We beat feet and got back to the truck with about 15 minutes of shooting light left, so we decided to walk out another old logging road. We hadn't been walking more than five minutes when we spotted 2 deer on the uphill side. The closer one was definatly a buck. He asks me "neck or shoulder"? I told him "shoulder" and he shoots. I could tell that he hit him but with light fading fast i did not want to waste time, so i grabbed the flashlight and went to find blood. It was a really nice feeling to find the amount of blood that we found, so i knew that it was going to be a short tracking job but being that it was his first time, i really wanted to show him how to do it and not just start wandering around looking for a deer. The buck had only gone about 40 yards and he only had to make a 30 yard shot with my 22-250. After congratulations, gutting, and getting the buck back to the truck, it was off to camp. It was about 20 degrees and the wind was blowing about 15-20 mph, so it was really cold skinning it out but he helped with no complaints. We spent some time getting it all cleaned up, ate dinner, talked about the day and then hit the sack...and we got to sleep in thanks to his good shot. I was really impressed with his composure and he made a great shot.
Just wanted to share a cool moment with you all. Now it's time for my bird hunting. Good luck with all your hunting adventure to come.
The picture quality is not all that great because i had to use my cell phone.

Re: Nephews first buck
Would you please congratulate your nephew on his hunt for me? I look forward to taking my nephew out when it is time. He is 4. He is all about frogs and snakes at the moment, but we will turn him to big game soon enough... Anyway, back to your nephew. Looks like a great buck. Hope he goes out again next year...

Congrats to your nephew. I must have driven right by that buck on my way out that afternoon, but at that point I was looking for grouse.....
