Default Free ICE in Newport

Fish Peddler (big blue building) on the Embarcadero has fish totes out in front. First come, first served.

Wouldn't it be great if someone could get over there before they close (7pm) and load up a pickup truck and haul it to Depoe for the morning run at 0500? John was going to see if they would do this for us, but the "free ice" cost him a $70.00 parking ticket. So if you go by there, best to not try and do it with a boat. Parking is terrible.

Jen- you should be able to get 4 or 5 lbs in that little white thing you're driving. Won't that do it?

Mel - you wouldn't believe what I got in (and on) that little white thing last week. the stuff that was in and on it probably weighed more than the car itself. It was funny to see how it all expanded to a pile larger than the car when it was unpacked. BUT - we managed to can 12 cases of tuna at the beach last sunday. And vac-pac the rest. No fish processing after a 3-hr drive. That was SWEET!

I got a pretty darn good picture in my head of that! You ever see one of those life rafts inflation ropes get pulled? LOL

Get dump ice from fish processing plants and commercial buyers. It is the stuff that they put in totes when they unload the boats. That is probably where the free ice is comming from.

I've got a truck, but right now it's full of two BRAND-NEW Suzuki 4-stroke outboards, a 140 and a 9.9. They should look real nice on the back of my Ed Wing.

I'm dropping them off to Ed tomorrow, but I might be able to pick up and deliver a load on Sunday. I'll watch this thread.

Uh...who's gonna chip in for my ticket?

Thanks PeterMac,
I replied back. I tried the canneries before and got a "go ice for sale" response. Flake ice would be awesome but any ice at a good price would be great!

Hey guys,

I just got off the phone with Tillamook Ice Co
2035 Wilson River Lp TILLAMOOK, OR 97141-9021
(503) 842-7226

He say's that he's got 40lb bags for $3.00 and he would be interested in setting up a drop off location in Depot for the sport guys if we could come up with a spot.

They put out about 10 tons a day from what I understand and also do deliver to Newport, so a drop at Depot would just be a stop on the way.

The chemicals in this ice will eat your truck :depressed: Put it into coolers or a tote.

Anybody interested in pursuing this? I can put a ton (literally) in the back of my truck, but don't want to make myself crazy bouncing back and forth between Depoe and Newport. Darn stuff doesn't have much of a shelf-life in the bed of my pickup. :depressed:

Keta, explain what you mean about that stuff eating up my truck? Corrosive? Does this mean I shouldn't pour my Canadian Blended over it?

I would be happy to get ice from this source but I fish on weekdays and usually there are only a couple of boats going out. I also leave at about 0500 so it seems that the logistics would be difficult...what can we do to make this work? The cost of ice is running close to the cost of fuel, for me!

If you guys decide to transport ice from Newport to Depoe please post it. I have tried about every source in Lincoln City and Depoe. Looks like that good snow ice is only in Newport down at the docks. Maybe we can all chip in a finally get a supply stream of ice from Newport to points North.

I'd settle for a reliable source for reasonably priced shaved ice in Newport! Funny how there is so much there and no way to get it in the morning...or even at night. Anyone have some contacts at the buying stations? Shaved is prefered to crushed or cubed, IMNSHO. Any reasonably priced ice available at early morning hours would be a bonus. I am currently supporting the all night market in Newport, on ice alone...they know me when I drive up!!!
