Crashin Bait -- That made for some great reading! Thanks for the link.

After reading that it appears that the most likely method for getting one hooked up would be to use large live baits like the Sardines or Mackerel. Both of those in the live variety are a little hard to come by in this neck of the woods. Let alone the trouble of keeping them alive.

Anyone got a line on some live anchovie? When I went out of Westport last year that was really the ticket. We would troll until we hooked into an Albie and then we would throw a scoop of anchovie off of both sides of the boat. Then bait up and fly line them out. What a blast at least until the Blue Sharks show up.

I heard there is live bait up in Astoria or Illwaco. Anyone know which outfit has it?

I need some for our trip on the 25th on the Tiger.

Would an Abu 6500 be to light for fly lining bait for Albies, or would you get a prompt introduction to Mr. Zing Pow!

Not on the Oregon side, but report was that somone was selling it in Ilwaco last year. Haven't heard about it this year.

Catch&Eat- where are you? Have you see the live bait this year?

Hey cooter (what's that mean, anyway?)

Those way-down-south boats are drifting or anchoring on spots where they know the bluefin are below. So the live bait is the right fishing technique. Up here (and in central to northern CA) the usual method is to troll a lure way, way, way back. Large cedar plugs, yo-zuri bonita, something like that. Bluefin are notoriously boat-shy. So if you think (or hope) they're in the area, you put a rig 200 yards (or more) back. If you actually see them breaking, again you put the gear way back, and troll that lure in a wide turn around the fish, but don't run the boat over them as they'll spook in a heartbeat.

Threemuch..Believe me, once in awhile a bluefin will hit the handline..If you start pulling on the handline and it doesn't move shut the boat down immediately and make sure the other guys each grab a gaff as the fish will be real hot..If possible keep it coming at the boat and have the gaffers stick the fish as soon as they can,,you might not get more than one shot. A 100 lb gorilla pretty much does what it wants when it wants..I know this is a given but be sure to use gloves on the big guys..Lot more forgiving hooking the big ones on rod n reel vs the handline........

Default Blue Fin? Yellow Fin?

In years past have any of you Salty Dogs ever gotten into Blue or Yellow Fin Tuna off the Oregon coast?

If this could be consistenly done I would have to ante up and get the blue water boat! The only problem would be convincing the wife!

Tuna Tuna Tuna!!!

17 hours to go!!!

No Yellows, Blues are there but hard to hook up. VERY few Blues are hooked, even less are landed. UG got one last year. Yellowfin are rare enough anwhere North of Diego let alone off Oregon. Their lower temp range is in the mid-high seventies if I remember right.
You have a much better chance of catching a Striped Marlin or a Swordfish of Oregon than a Yellowfin. I won't tell your wife if you don't though!

Anybody know where that temp chart that was posted last year went?

Oh... did I mention Marlin?

Yah I remember some of the stories from last year about "Bill" and the broken rods! That's insane!!

Do they still have that picture in Brookings of "Merlin the mixed up marlin"? Has anyone else ever seen this picture? If I remember right it was a small Striper that someone caught while salmon fishing!

Here's a report about tackle smashing bluefin from the Southland: Bluefin

Look for what Dennis Braid has to say about the one that got away. Truely powerful fish!

BFT are a very real possibility. Never heard of a landing of YFT north of San Luis Obispo, and that was during El Nino and the boats were running 100 miles south. On any non El Nino year, they won't be north of Point Conception.

I have never landed a BFT, but was on board for one, a peanut, about 20 pounds taken on a swim bait fished on the slide on 20 pound gear. But I have seen schools of hundreds that were all 100-200 pound range. Very hard to get them to strike. Light (100lb)flourocarbon leader is required. I don't think you will ever hook one on a handline.
