Default Ocean today 7/9

Hit Garibaldi at 6:00 am, The bar and Ocean was totally socked in with fog. Headed out to 140 feet and started getting takedowns and misses. Fishing with 100'visibilty is erie. The water temp was 58 and later in the day at 230' it was 61
, we could not keep the sharks off the hooks. We had a 6' half spool my buddie and after a nice tug of war we got it to the boat. We also had 4 others on and they released themselves after reel burning runs.

The ocean was flat as a pond on a summer day most of the day. For the day we only landed 1 good silver. Some days you nail em' and some days you catch sharks, Sharks can be fun

It definately is a little strange fishing in a think fog, makes you wonder how people did it before Loran or GPS, maybe they just stayed home and mowed the grass instead?

We fished out of Depoe today, same beautiful ocean there, but no fog. We ended up with 3 quick limits, with the smallest Coho being a 8lber. I cant wait to see how big these fish are going to be in a month

Jet- 58-61 degree water and sharks (and sharks mean blue water) = TUNA! You didn't run some feathers or plugs?

We were out of Depoe today as well. Hardly gets much better than that . We too messed with a shark (or he with us) Don't know if he took our bait or grabbed a salmon ? Biggin' though and just as well that he snapped the leader as far as I was concerned. The coho are , indeed , getting chubby although we did tag one that was all of maybe 6-7 lbs. No chinook today ...we stayed pretty shallow. Gotta' love summer time !!

I had them in the boat (Mexican flag, purple and black) but really did not know how to run them. Amazing to see Blue water that close to shore. I just checked the Terrafin report and yes it does show what we found off of Garibaldi. Really it was too warm to be good for coho I assume. It was refreshing to wash my hands and find bath water.

Hey Andy, how tough is it to get out of Depoe Bay? I have been out of Garabaldi and the Columbia on so so days. I have a 21 TJ hardtop with lots of boat handling experience (Ocean, river and whitewater).

Is like picking your wave to run the backside when enetering other bars?

Jet,

As many other will probably agree, I think it is one of the easiest harbors to launch out of. I just love the fact that in 15 minutes from pulling away from the dock, I'm fishing 5 miles off shore.

The lack of crowds is very nice, the cleaning station is great, Gary the Harbor Master is a great guy and will make room for you(mooring) if your in a pinch, it's closer than Newport, the launch fee is only $2, man I could go on and on about Depoe...

If you are comfortable about going over the CR Bar you will have no problems with Depoe. You can stop along the freeway and check out what "The Hole" looks like and the ocean beyond before you commit to launching.

The Coast Guard has a info line they update at 5am-ish every morning with the conditions: 541-765-2122.

Just get on to channel 80 and announce when you are out-going and incoming through "The Hole"

As for picking your wave, if there is a big enough wave to pick, it's just like every where else, just make sure you keep on the throttle enough to give you enough steering control through "The Hole"

I'm sure Fish Assassin could answer any more questions or correct me if I'm wrong anywhere.

Give it a try, you'll love it!

Andy - you covered it fairly well. The only thing with Depoe is that it will sometimes be restricted where Newport or other harbors won't. It is one of the first 'holes' to get rough when the seas are turning. Because it's so small, the Coast Guard doesn't hesitate to put restrictions on it if it gets a bit rough.

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helv">Jet- that's the easy part. Sturg. size gear, spread them back from 50-200 feet on rods (shorter if you're doing hand lines low to the water). 6-7 knot troll. If you don't get anything in a while change colors, change distance back etc. Just like salmon, play till ya hit then switch to whats working. Oh- no fish on rod holders with tight drags.

Miss... LOL I almost lost a pole last year in the big pond for that reason, brought back a mamory. The little harbor sounds like fishing in a neighborhood where everybody knows everybody.

Tuna may not have worked yesterday as I did not bring the ugly sticks just the chrome/ shark catchers. By the way Sharks on salmon gear can be a blast, kinda of like fishing for oversize with a salmon rod, fire up the big motor and chace em'.

Thanks Andy, if the water remains warm out of Garibaldi this weekend I think we will hit Depoe or Newport. My buddy wants to bring his 24' fish catcher out this weeked

Jet,

I would be up for Newport or Depoe on Sat. Would like to try something different anyway. I have my boat at the house since the swim deck and stern rail is still a couple weeks out. You going to pull the Hinterhoeller? She is ready to go.

Does anyone know if the new Sportsman Warehouse in Clackamas is open yet? Do they have Tuna gear?

RatherB - SW is apparently not open as scheduled today http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb....c;f=1;t=026533

And the one in Salem did not carry much in the way of saltwater gear, let alone TUNA! gear. Unfortunately, they likely have a central purchasing model and won't carry different things in different stores. :depressed:

Maybe we should all write to them with shopping lists.

Fisherman's at Delta Park didn't have much the last time I was there. OC store had more, but still not a hot selection. Good luck.
