Default Coyote Pretty

A few weeks ago there was a post about chartruse Coyote Spoons outfishing bait for salmon. Anyone else been doing well in the salt with these? Hope so, I picked up a handful yesterday. Any tips for using them in the ocean? Do you just run them behind a diver?

yep, used them last year, expect to do so again...you don't need much to get a coho's attention.

Crazy salmon days are here.

I ran a char/grn 3.5" Coyote behind a diver at 12 pulls and had a Coho nail it as soon as I got it down. No scent either. Would like to have fished it a little longer but that one made our limit so we headed in.

One thing I like about fishing spoons is they make for easy releases. They give you a lot more leverage on the fish. Just grab the spoon and twist out the hook. Also, you don't reel them in for a bait check and find them GONE!

They may not get you as much action as herring will, but seem to hook fish better. Make sure you stay legal and use one single point hook though.

Has anyone tried pulling diving plugs yet? No diver needed.

8knots- try the Coyotes out behind the divers on trolling weights if you have a lot of rods out. They work great cause if you get hit and run, you don't need to pull in over the other lines and check bait. Lets you run more gear without tangles. You can put them behind a flasher and weight too for a little more color.

Oh- and some days they outfish bait, some days they don't. Just when you think you have the fish figured out...they change their mind.

Great input, thanks i-fishers. I woke up at 2:00 in the morning with a bad case of tuna fever. Hot sweats, dizzy, aching head. I know a can of tuna won't cure this. Hopefully, putting my boat back together today. May make a run down river from Scappoose, put 300 to 400 gallons of diesel in at Cathlamet, secure moorage space at Ilwaco for the summer, find a ton of ice and the sweet spot for my slow boat to slip across the bar and hit it this weekend. Gotta have dreams! The free SST dated 7/9 looked so good

8knots- I thought you were headed for far off places and wouldn't be at the coast till August? I can't go down this weekend but planning on the weekend after and/or the next one.

Keep in touch!

Hey Mel, I was in Mexico for a week. I have to get the boat down to Ilwaco to have it hauled out on the 17th, then I am in Chicago for business until the 25th. I have two weeks of vacation in August that I will be staying on the boat in Ilwaco and lots of other days that I can run down if the conditions are good. I am trying to get down this weekend to get one tuna trip in.

8knots- which two weeks in Aug if you've picked them. I've gotta babysit the Farm the first two weekends (wifes in Montana 2nd-10th or so) so I'm thinking about taking 2 weeks down there after that. Be good to have a weekday running mate.
Weekend company is usually easy, weekdays is harder.

Kamloops- you taking any vacation weeks in Aug?

On my 4 salmon days I have fished ONLY cyote spoons and dodgers. Limits every day including 5 chinook to 24 lbs (2-3 rods per day) They are definately workers....the 3.5 inch seem to work best with 4" next. This is my first time running them but I AM impressed!

We've smacked good numbers of chinook with the Cop Car (black and white) coyotes up north and in Windy Bay. I want to try them at Tillamook this year while everybody else is trolling spinners.

They were our go-to offering when we ran low on bait, but we've done so well we now start with at least one rod rigged that way. Blue and silver and black and white for nooks, chartreuse and silver scale for coho.

Let us know how you do.

Hey Mel, August 11-22 is on the books, but I will be able to get away other days when the good weather is in. I was blown hard into the Ilwaco Marina yesterday with the strong southerly winds with noone to catch me. What good are they, those darn south winds and swell?

Great feedback on the coyote spoons...hope to try them later this week.

Have never got skunked yet on the 3.5" coyote in the chartreuse/fishscale. A couple times I was the highliner on the boat.

Seems to catch chinook pretty well also.

I've always used it behind a diver and one time including a fish/flash on UG's boat.

When I was at fisherman's yesterday I noticed them on sale at $2.99 each. I grabbed 3 of them for a ten spot and change.

Sale goes through July 27th.

One last note. Although not very scientific, once or twice whole herring out fished the coyote early on but after the sun was up the coyote out fished bait.

The 3.5" sells for $2.79 at Sportsmans Warehouse. They have 4 and 5 inchers too. Never seen those monster ones. I got me one for Buoy 10 so we'll see...

Heck of a deal Bounty Hunter! Is that the every day price?

I've never seen the 5" coyote either. I think the 3.5" works better for coho and as I said it catches chinook also.

I've had problems with the fish scale prism tape coming off the crartruese/fishscale spoon this year but it keeps on catching.

I went on a tour of the Luhr Jensen mfg plant today. Watched them making Coyote spoons, Crocodiles, Hot shots, Ford fenders, Kwikfish, B-2 Squids, and more.

All lures are painted by hand. WOW!!!

I kept finding myself saying, "I've caught a lot of fish with that one, and that one, and that one...."

I was drooling all over the place.

Hey, 8knots:
Let me know if you ever need a deck hand. I'm pretty flexible with time off and it would be fun to fish with you again. I've got a picture of you, Blubeast and Taylor's Viewpoint that I'll send you soon.

We fished with 3.5" Coyotes in chartreuse/fishscale, copcar, and blue & silver colors and they outfished our herring at Newport yesterday! The other great thing about the Coyotes is that if a fish nails them and doesn't get into the hooks, you don't need to reel in and check 'em. They're still working. I'm sold! We caught both Chinook(35lbs.) and Coho with them. Does anyone have good success with any other colors?

DepoeBayDan,

I'd love to, but I'll be busy for a while. I'll try to let you know when I can come again. Sounds like the chinook fishing is better than Garibaldi.

I never thought I'd meet a Coyote that I liked...since the Road Runner went off the air.

I'll post pics tomorrow from the office

BTW Depot Bay Dan, I confirm, "En Fuego".

Went out with Diamondback out of Charleston Sunday and the Coyote 3.5 chartreuse/fishscale came through again!

http://www.ifish.net/ubb/ultimatebb....;f=21;t=002300

Maybe I shouldn't call it fishscale since it was the same one I used on Nancy's boat (Sea Jypzee) when I caught 2 chinook on it and it was missing the tape (fishscale).

I was just getting ready to replace it with a new one when a wild one inhaled it. (I thought the wild ones were smarter than that)

The rep told me two years ago it was a hot one for coho and it hasn't failed me yet!

It put two hatchery coho in Diamondback's boat Sunday.

No bait, no scent, no mess, just "fish on"!

There is a "coyote" thread going on the community forum as well and I posted a pic of a new coyote and one of the coyote that is missing the fishscale tape that I have been catching both chinook and silver's on.

How would you guys compare the Apex lures to the Coyote? I was out a few weeks back and used Apex rather successfully - hit two chinook with the watermellon and completed the limit of coho with blue/silver.
