Default Coos Bay Report

Well we grabbed the boat this evening for a late afternoon bite after work and managed 8 takedowns in the samlon. Out of the 8 only 4 stuck to the hook and only two went in the box. However, the ocean was the nicest I've seen it this year. I've been reading the posts by others up north and wonder if it's the same ocean we were on. I averaged 31 mph on it and was very comfortable for a sled to boot. Amazing what 100 miles can do on the big blue. As of the TUNA, they're still staying on the edge of the sport boats around here. The water just doesn't want to creep in closer than that 35 mile range just yet, but we've got our eyeballs on it and will post something when I hear it.

TC
Was at Winchester Bay today, limit of six cohos by 11am.
What a beautiful ocean also. Smaller grade of fish than two weeks ago though.
We'll be back down this afternoon till Fri., looks like the weather might cooperate for a few more days
Might have to make an afternoon run if we get down early enough.

Hey all. I am leaving for Charleston on Friday and willbe there all week. last year we put over 60 fish in the coolers. Bar is not bad as long as the weather is good. There is a tackle shop by the boat launch. Can't rember the name but excellent place to get bait, gear and good fishing reports. The lady the runs the shop is great. We will be staying at Basendorf campground for the week we will have 4-5 boats. Mine is a black weldcraft renegade. If you are around the area please stop by and say hello. All are welcome.

Plan on a week fo good fishing, good friends, and good eatin. So if you are looking for any of the three, stop in.

I'll be there Friday night thru Sunday. I'll be staying at the Charleston Marina RV Park. My boat is Red Maxxum Pro Series say hi. We decided to go out of Charleston to bottom fish after hopefully limiting out on salmon.

I got to meet Kurt (KGS) and Guy (Mrduckman) at Winchester Bay a couple of weeks ago. It's great to get to meet more people this way.

Didn't get to talk much with Guy. It was great to talk with you Kurt. I'm sure we will catch up again soon!

Good Fishing
James

I will be heading down to Eel Lake Camp ground 7/11 to 7/16....whats is like going out of Winchester Bay or Coos Bay...I have a 21' Super Vee Pro (Open Boat)...I know it depends on the conditions and can call that when I am on the ground. But as for going out little nervous since I have never gone out there before.

Also like to get bait their where is a good place....like to avoid the drive up & down the city strip to find bait..

Any help or advise would be oh...so awesome...

Right now with the weather either of the bars will be easily crossable with your boat. However, the two are different for channels and where people usually cross. For winchester, stay away from the north jetty. It's very shallow over there and everyone hugs the south end. For Coos Bay (charleston) it's almost the opposite. The entire jaws at charleston is very deep so you won't have trouble going through any of it but people tend to hug the north side for a wind break usually.

Pretty much every store in this area carries bait so no worries about finding it, but probably the best place is at winchester where they have live bait and they "zap" the fish for you on the spot. Doesn't get any fresher. The bait shop has a dock in the water that boats will stop at on the way out to the water. You'll see it as it's directley in the way on your way out of the boat basin.

Both ports are producing a lot of fish, so you shouldn't have any trouble limiting wherever you go. The only other thing is you can bottomfish out of charleston close by and you can't do that at winchester.

I will be monitoring channel 18 on the CB and my cell phone will be on 760-0189.

Not sure what camp site number we will have but we have some folks coming from Grants pass, roseburg, eugene, Corvallis, Albany and Bend.

So we will try and all get sites together at Basendorf. You will know my camp from all the rest. Look for the lights if it is dark. You will know what I mean.

oterwise give me a call on thwe cell or the CB

f~p

Oh we plan on hitting the launch ramp around 6:00 am. We may launch fro the ramp across the bay from the charelston ramp. Not as crowded, fish cleaning station right there and best of all, it is free.

I'll keep an eye out for you guys! I typically run channel 16 & 9 on the CB. VHF 16, 22 & 68.

Low tide is @ 5:51am and it's a -2.0ft. We probably are looking at going out around 7:30am to 8am or so.

Well looks like I'm going to salmon and bottomfish with the rest of ya on saturday, then I'm headed out to the big pond on sunday after the TUNA!! Give me a hollar if you aren't finding many fish, but I hear the first of the morning bite has been great. Oh by the way, don't worry about the low tide thing. The ocean is so flat right now a tail end to low tide won't be more than a riffle. Typical channels here that people monitor are 19 vhf, and 11 cb. I'll be on those. Good Luck.

My daughter and I went out today. Wow, what a beautiful day on the pond. 58.2 deg 3 miles offshore. I never took my eye off the west, long ocean swells, a small ripple for wind waves. Unfortunately, I'm sure my wife would skin my hide and dip me in salt brine if I took the kid out for tuna.....soooooo.....we played w/cohos all day. Two nice keepers, lots of finned fish and little ones.

We'll plan on hitting it in the morning too.

TC, I might wanna tag along behind you guys Sunday. Right now, I don't have any riders, I'll be looking.

What time you guys taking off?

Tailchaser,

Did you get out for Tuna over the weekend out of Coosbay? If you did how did you do? Are you going to be heading out next weekend? If so we would love to team up with you. My buddy has a 23ft Stripper w/outriggers ready for tuna! We want to go this up coming weekend weather premiting of coarse and at least one or more boats.

I seen a few guys at the dock both Saturday and Sunday with tuna. I guess they said they were out 35 miles, but caught them much closer.

Saturday we limited out on 7 Coho and 1 chinook in a 4 hours after releasing many wild coho. Then headed south for bottom fishing and got about 4 drifts in and 3 sea bass. The wind was much worse than predicted. The drift was just way to fast in the afternoon for bottom fishing. Sunday the fishing was much slower. We caught alot of small chinook and some large wild coho. Got 4 coho and 1 shark.

Let me know about next weekend.

James

Here's what I've been hearing from the locals as of today; (per Charleston)
The best fishing has been 30+ miles out. However, several tuna were caught 10-12 miles out. Salmon fishing today was dead, perhaps because the water is so warm.

My neighbor is going out tomorrow morning for tuna. They're gonna fish hard closer in and see what they find.

I should be with them, but have unavoidable responsibilities tomorrow (i.e. work....yuck)

I'll let you know what I hear.

We did make it out and made a bad mistake of staying in close to the intial temperature breaks. The closest one caught was 10 miles from the jetties, however these are straggler fish and don't make the same mistake we did on concentrating on them since the water temps were there. One boat we ran with went to 30 miles and ended up with 29 on the day. A couple of days earlier they had 49 in the same spot. Several boats fished the closer stuff and averaged 6-11 fish. We lost several fish also so we had our chances at more.

The latest weather reports don't look that good with a north wind blowing all week. That could push out the warm water but we'll have to wait and see. There's a warm spot off of Port Orford right now that's showing 67 degrees at about 25 miles. We're talking marlin water there! Anyhow, I'll try and make a decision about thursday on what we're going to do and how the weather reports come around. Otherwise the more the marrier.

One of the problems right now is we don't have that many people going out and the commercials are tight lipped to sport guys. We need a good fleet to span out and find the concentration of fish rather than one here and one there. So I'll be in touch on the weekend plans.
