Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
I've got a kid that lives a couple of houses down that likes to go fishing. His parents don't have the money to buy him a rod, and he won't let me buy him a new one. He likes to salmon fish, and I have taken him out on the boat a couple of times. He does not like using or borrowing other peoples stuff so what I thought I would do is find someone who has a good used rod for sale at a decent price and then just buy it for him, slap an old 5000C on it and leave it on his doorstep. Let me know if you have what I'm looking for.

Chynook,
What type of tackle or line does he need? I've got blue foxes for days, I'll tie him some drift rigs, whatever he needs. GS/WLW

Chynook, you deserve a lot of credit. People like you, that take the time to help a kid get interested in a positive thing like fishing, are what makes the world a better place. Way to go! Keep up the good work.

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
Chynook email me your address and I can provide you with line, lures, tackle. Also I have Steelhead rods if you like.(sorry not Salmon) Just let me know what you need. I'm serious!!! When I was a kid I was in a similar situation and a neighbor introduced me to fishing and to this day I still have the fishing rod and combo he gave me.

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
I just thought i would share this story
I went to damascus grade school i was in the 6th grade (in the early 70s)when they called about 25 of us to the office over the loudspeaker,as we left our different rooms heading for the office we were all kinda scared and curious at the same time. the principal took us to a conference and told us the reason we are all here is that none of us were in band or sports or any other clubs
then went on to say that someone in the community
has donated money and supplies for us to learn how to fish, it would be after school once a week
for about 5 weeks and we had to get permission and our own ride home, i think about 15 of us took him up on the offer.one of our teacher who was an avid fisherman volenteared to teach the class.
on our first day he handed every body a cheap fiberglass blank,a cork handle w/built in real seat and a hand full of eyes, then for the next couple of weeks we built our poles.after our poles were complete we got to build a couple of lures and he explained how the work and why the fish would like them (looking back i think the lures were almost complete when we got them).
then 1 day when we showed up in class there was an old man sitting in the back, our teacher went on to explain this is the person who donated the money & supplys for this class, but his name was never said as he wanted to remain anymouse, but he had brought a box with him,he said hi to all of us then gave the teacher the box and left.
(what a great man)the teacher opened the box and handed us each a brand new zebco reel filled with line and a small tackle box, that was it for our class, but that next weekend we were off on our feild trip,im not sure were we went but it was a pond, maybe even a pay pond, we all caught 3 or 4 fish using our handmade poles and lures. as my parents dont fish this was my experince with fishing, from then on i was hooked and fished the rest of my childhood and to this day.
thank you old man in the back of my classroom for changing my life in such a profound way.
i would like to do somthing like this...im not rich but have time,,,any ideas
thanks for reading my story

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
OK, you guys are too much.........I don't know what to say to all the generosity that you all have shown. I was looking for a 7' to 8'6" MH casting rod for this kid, and you guys have got him almost all decked out.
Hunter56787: see above
Neutron: see above
Steel_beaver: Thanks!
Mad Mikey: RH (crank on right side)PM me please
Fish Hawg: The 10-12# will be perfect...the 9 footer would probably be too long but awsome for summer steelhead...PM me please
West Linn Wader: Most of the time, we are either anchored using Kwikfish or trolling herring. I have taken him out Fall fishing and he has a couple of Clancy's that he's real partial to, one of those he reeled up off of a snag, so it has some value and meaning to him.
Pearl: message sent
Spazz: You and Fish Hawg work that thing out and let me know via pm how it goes.
Alwyze Fishin: This might be the very best thing for him - I can teach him how to wrap and then it will really be worth something to him. Shoot me a pm.
Moley Molson: Don't worry - I think he's well taken care of now.
Sourdough: Thanks!
LQQKASTAR: One of the things I was able to give him without him turning it down was my old tackle box, only because he knew that I had replaced it. Save it for the next kid that comes along this board if that's ok.
Fishpez: You have mail.
LQQASTAR: Awesome way to get "Hooked" on fishing. It would be real neat if we could get the people of Ifish to donate enough stuff for about 20 kids and then pick a school, find some needy kids, and take them fishing, maybe even get Bill Monroe to cover it giving credit to IFish and it's people. I'm in!
Salmonberry Jeff: Amen!
To all of you!!!!

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
CHINOOK ...
I would love to set somthing up like i wrote about but not sure how to go about it,we would need sponsers,a treasurer, people with knowlege... and sombody that can spell (lol) maybe jenn for treasurer or somebody that she recomends.
from the responses i saw that you got, this is a real possibility, but there is alot to consider
where can we do this?
can we do it this year?
who will handle the money?..(not me im allready overdrawn)
who can get us discounts?
but my biggest concerne is who do we offer this to
I would say unger 14 as no licence is reqired.
im not sure what my role would be in this, other than getting all these people together.
i would love to here from people that can contribute there expertise, im sure i dont want to do this with 20 different reels and 20 different poles, so keep your stuff for the neighbor kid.
if anybody has any ideas or would like to pledge
anything please e mail me @ jackthedataguy@ msn.com
or just post here.
ps. any pledge for money will NOT be taken by me
tight lines
jack

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
Well, as of 8pm this evening, the kid has 2 rods, 2 reels, 3 tackle boxes, a bag of jigs, 6 kwikfish, about 5 pounds of lead, a net, some line, swivels, spreaders, spinners, hooks, and a scheduled fishing trip with me in the morning. It took 2 trips to his porch, and he still does not know they are there. I am hoping that he will find them tomorrow morning before we go, if not, he may not get any sleep. A big thanks goes out to all of you - you know who you are! I am hoping to put him on here tomorrow to thank all of you - If we're not too busy cleaning fish that is! (his birthday is coming next month - I am going to get him an IFish hat - and I know he'll be proud to wear it!)

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
Well done folks!!!!
Somewhere with in this post something worth while will come to life that will make everyones efforts worth while.
This kid may end up being a politician that supports the sportsman, maybe our next state biologest that unlocks the secret that gets our fish runs back to where they were 100 years ago, a scientist that discovers a lure that is so magic it catches a fish every cast, or maybe he just gives another kid a rod and reel in the year 2025 and passes the legacy along..
These things seem to have a good ending.

Re: Neighbor kid needs a rod (UPDATED)
Very cool
I think ifish needs to set something up like where we take kids fishing...like take a kid fishing day or something like that. Like go to some foster house and find a few kids that want to go fishing and take them.

I have thought about the same thing but there are some liability issues that kind of scare me off.
I have been thinking of and setting up a "ifish kids" springer flotilla in April. I have some ideas that I think would be of interest to alot of people. Once I get it worked out in my head I'll post my ideas and we'll see where it goes.
