Default Newport 7/8

Newport 7/8 was kinda sloppy out in the big blue. forcast was for 2 ft ww and 4 ft swell. It was more like 2 ft swell and 4 ft ww. We looked around up by the light house about 5 miles out and could not locate any salmon. We decided to go to some of my old GPS coords and give it a try. About 7.5 mile out we released two small nates and kept one small black mouth. Looked hard all over the 40 fathom line (240ft). could not locate any concentrations of salmon. We trolled clear down to seal rock and there we switched to bottom fishing gear. We wound up one short of limits for Ling and caught a couple blacks and other various bottom fish. After about 4pm the ocean started to lay down and we made it back to the docks @ 5:30. Tight lines.. Luckyduck1

Thanks for the report. Why do you think the fishhave moved so far offsore? During the opener I was catching them out of Newport on the bouy line.I have heard that it is a response to the water temps. They must have been higher then. I don't have a temp gauge yet. But it looks like I may be getting one soon. Most limits I hear are coming from offshore 10-12 miles and some hog smilees are being caught. I won't be out on the big blue for another week. Until then......

Stick, I heard that the water temp went down in closer and the fish moved back out. I heard on the radio that there were a couple other IFishers (didn't catch their Handles) out on the pile that did better than I did. My Duck is to Flat bottomed to contend with wind chop over a couple feet so I did not make the trip all the way out. Maybe someone more knowledgable can chime in on this topic. I have only been out on the big blue a few years now and have a ton to learn. Luckyduck1
