Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Crossed the bar at first light this morning with high hopes of a smooth ocean with 4 foot swells and 12 seconds apart. That wasn't the case by no means, it was pretty sloppy for my sled. So much for the condition report
I hit the whistle buoy and headed WNW till I hit 230 feet of water. The water temp was still cold but it was sloppy enough to make me not want to go out any further with the SW wind blowing. We trolled for better than an hour without a takedown. Just as soon as I commit to take care of some personal business my rod slammed down. Before I could get a handle on things, the rod holder broke and I lost the fish, rod, and everything in between  Nothing like throwing about two hundred ducketts in the drink and loosing your fish to boot. I re rigged and trolled for another hour with no other action. I have never seen it so slow for coho out in the big blue.
I should have headed west to find some warmer water but the conditions was not getting any better and it was already going to be a rough ride back to the rocks. I decided for some bottom fish and headed my sled for green can #2 and then south. We picked up three lings and one sea bass on two drifts. I noticed another I fisher who's moniker I can't remember hitting sea bass on the top of the water. He was kind enough to toss me a couple of the jigs he was using and in no time we put limits of sea bass on my boat.
Due to the conditions, I decided to call it a day with bottom fish limits and the salmon that could have been. Water was still cold at 220 feet, about 49 degrees. I hope those who ventured out farther got into some fish. Everyone I talked to back at the ramp was skunked as well.
I'll be back on Saturday, hope to see you there...

Good job and great sense of humour. Last time I busted a rod holder I did not stop cussing until my voice was gone.
Dang that Bill anyway.
Tacklebuster you have demonstrated a certain amount of caution and good judgement in your decision to bail due to the bigger than expected SW wind. I applaud you and encourage others to follow your excellent example.
Good job, pup.

Sorry about your loss. Was it a fish-on rod holder?

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
We were having this rod holder discussion this weekend. So where can you get a nice solid SS version of the fish-on? Preferably with no tilt up/down feature to slip on ya. Recessed gunnel mounts don't alway's work because of the angle/depth and stuff in the way under the gunnel.
Is there a business oppertunity here for someone. I'll buy 3, maybe more!

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Chris,
Sorry about the rod holder thing. Been there done that. Lost a nice rod and real combo in Texas trolling for stipers one time like that.
Great job on the limit of bottom fish. I hope I can get out and do the Tuna thing soon. Lots of great advise on this board. I appreciate all the excellent dialog.
Chris, I still owe you. Let me know when and where. I have my annual meat haul to Alaska coming up one week from this Saturday.
Can't wait for that. Keep up the great posts.

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Just forget the fish-on holders. Very weak. I replaced all mine with the Scotty rod holders. Much better with a positive cog locking system. So far so good for me, and less expensive too. Remeber that Scotty is made in Canada. The Canadian dollar is stronger by about 12% from the first of the year, but it's still a good deal.

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
John- I'm still cussing about that rod holder, I guess that spotty tail caught us today. It was a tough call to make when your out at 230 feet of water with the SW wind blowing. I heard pukers were getting into some at 11 miles out but those extra couple of miles had more salt in them than I did so I decided to gracefully bow out. The salmon will rise for the Tacklebuster another day.
Pitch Pocket- It was an Attwood holder with a rail mount. I must have had some stress cracks in them from peelers at the gorge.
Much thanks to the kind salty dog that threw a pup a couple of jigs to try. They worked like a charm

Kentucky Hog Hunter- I envy you dude, that meat haul sounds like a lot of fun. I am still a Tuna virgin as well. I would love to hitch a ride and get some know how under my cap to skipper a trip of my own. Have fun and be safe up North, I will look forward to sharing some water with you when you get back

Billy? I think it was a guppy. Yea it bites to loose a rod. I haven't found an ad on rod holder that's worth having without a tie strap on your rod. I'd sure like to find a brand that really works. mabee one of you fine fabracator type might make a few prototypes that work and share the wealth.

Miss B,do you know anyone with a plasma cutter,I built around ten for family and friends bought SS tube holders from Randy(harry's Bait & Tackle)he had a guy building them for him .I ask him to have the guy build some brackets that had the same bolt pattern as the fish on's and Scottys, I then made a pattern from a fish on and traced it out on the SS tube holder fired up the plasma and cut them out,a lil' grind'n & file'n and your done..SS fish on's RJ I should have resized the pic sorry I hate scrolling

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Tackelbuster - I had a friend lose a good rod/reel combo in the river 2 years ago due to a holder failure. My suggestion would be to contact the manufacturer of the rod holder. Sometimes they will replace the rod/reel if you have some sort of documentation...ie., receipt and the broken remaining holder piece(s).

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Thanks Sea Jypzee, it's worth a shot. Oh yea, I was using my winning power ball ticket in place of a fish flash. What is it up too now, 260 mil?
Thanks Nancy, I'll give it a shot. How far have you guys been going out to get your salmon out of Depoe? I think I may try there next trip.

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Chris,
Sorry to hear that. Last year while diving for bottom fish, I found a rod with an ambassador reel with a fish still attached. Been using it for Salmon this year. Anyway I'll keep my eyes open for you. Also your suit is ready. How can we hook up? CAll me 503-369-1862

As of last friday we were picking up Salmon just off the whistle bouy. Not sure where they're at currently though.
Good luck!

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Last Saturday we had great luck with the coho in 160 ft of water about 5 miles out nnw of the third buoy. The surface temp read 50f. Limited in less than 3 hours. The strikes really seemed to increase when I injected with a mix of herring oil and anise. I'm going out on Thursday and I 'll send in a report.

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
Just happened to use new Scotty rod holders on Sunday in a friends brand new boat. I use rods with hypalon handles for trolling. A larger diameter than cork and takes more abuse. Those Scotty rod holders were very nice. Monday went out again but used the old Fish On rod holders in another buddies older boat. This actually happened to me. I got bit and the rod, reel and fish on rod holder made a 90 degree flash. I was lucky enough to grab the rod handle or it was bye-bye and that would have been $350.00 in the drink. Going to Scotty rod holders from now on. Like that idea of SS rod holders. Probably would buy them from a Ifish member if the bolt patterns match up to replace the Fishons I use.

Re: Salty pup's Newport adventure 7/8
One thing I have done with my Fishon's is to knock the little black bolt cover off. Then take a socket and really GRONK that bolt down. They quit slipping down that way!
The Stainless look SWEET!
