I finally got my first blacktail and only my second deer in ten years. My brother and I were doing a drive through some 5 year old reprod, my brother went low along the buffer of a lake and I was high next to some 40 year old timber. I see a deer moving across a small draw about 200 yards away. I wait until he is broadside to me and not moving, take a shot, thought I missed because he is still moving, wait until he presents broadside again, he isn't moving fast at all, bang, still nothing, I keep thinking I am missing, but can't believe it because I am using a branch on a tree for a rest and I mean I am solid steady, wait for a couple more minutes, he isn't running or anything, he stops broadside just above some hazel, bang, he finally goes down. I get him home and skinned out, there are three holes in him. I was using a 7 mm mag, and was holding dead on him at 200 yards. I can't believe he kept going after the first shot, let alone the second shot. After we had gotten the truck, we were driving around to pickup my deer, we spooked a doe across in front of the truck, my bother jumps out and chases the doe, I start off from where the doe came from and not more than five yards from me is a nice forked horn, in the same unit I shot mine and not more than 150 yards from where we were going to pick up my deer. I yell fork, shoot, he asks is it legal? As soon as he asked, it bolted, he fired twice, but the deer was booking it. No blood, almost 2 for 2 on Sunday. What an exciting afternoon. Especially for my brother, since this was his first deer hunt carrying a rifle. Hopefully I can find that fork for him next weekend when he comes down. Hope you all enjoyed the story and pics.
