Default Newport this weekend???

Anyone going over the bar for salmon this weekend? We will be at South Beach with the family and if we can get lucky and have decent conditions I will try and make my maiden trip over the bar. I have a 19' Duckworth, so if it looks iffy, I will stay in the bay and crab.

I will have a veteran with me, but I plan to be at the wheel so it should be fun. What should the conditions be like Friday and Saturday. I plan to leave after the low tide, but how soon is safe?

Thanks in advance for the advice,

Rip'N'Lips

Rip,

Be very careful this weekend crossing the bar. There are some huge ebb tides early in the morning both days, especially on Saturday. Roughly 10-11 ft. of water moving out of the bay those days. That's a bad thing. Considering those are the same tidal conditions the Taki Tooo went down on. The only difference is they went out in 12-15ft. seas and the forecast this weekend is for 7-8.

You can always go take a look and turn around but to be safe I wouldn't make the trip across the bar till at least 8am+. The afternoon tides are pretty much a non-issue.

Just use your head. Have fun!

We went out last weekend with almost the same conditions and it wasn't bad at all. The worst part was the wind that picked up in the late morning. The bar was flat an hour before low tide with a big exchange and a minus tide. The ocean was decent each day but the bar was worse later in the day because the wind picked up. We crossed 8 times at different times each day and the tide didn't seem to make a difference. I am not as experienced as the other people giving you advice but last weekend the earlier the better. The ocean and bar progresively got worse each day from first light on. Limits took about 3 1/2 hours of fishing each day. Chinook started at 50 ft. and moved to 150 ft by noon and the coho bit best at 7 pulls. We had to go out to 65 fathoms to get 51 degrees but it was worth it. About 8 miles off the lighthouse. Jesse

Rip, I too plan on going out for Salmon this weekend out of Newport. Low tides at the bar are at 5:14am Friday minus 1.4; 6:05 Sat minus 1.8; 6:53 Sunday minus 2.1.

As Corrirod states, don't cross too close to the low as the ebb may still be flowing since these are big tidal changes.

I'll be on ch 78... be safe and pls leave me at least a couple of fish.

I am thinking of joining all of you on Sunday as I am dropping my list of to do's and doing the don'ts for a day. I am still trying to decide on DB or Newport. Parking is a real problem at DB as everyone knows.

From my first two runs, I think I hit deeper water faster out of DB than Newport. Is DB an option or just a dumb thought with the - tides?

I'll most likely be going out for salmon on Sunday. We are moored in D47 in Newport. DoubleGaynor is the name of our boat. We monitor channels 16 and 78. We'll be running with at least one other boat. Feel free to stop by. We'll probably shove off at around 0500. Drop me a line if you like.

Peace, out!
