Broadheads
So, we have seen plenty of opinions on expandables and various threads on fav bullets among rifle hunters, but I haven't been able to find a recent query of favorite fixed broadheads.
I haven't bow hunted for a lot of years, but when I did, I was shooting the old standard Bear 2 blade.
So what do you like?

Re: Broadheads
I started out years ago shooting those bear heads. I shoot innerlock broadheads and also use to shoot thunderheads.

Re: Broadheads
I have the rocky mountain blitz broadhead. I haven't killed anything, but they fly exactly like my field tips. Anyone actually killed anything, especially an elk, with these broadheads?

Re: Broadheads
Like the "which gun is the best" you're going to get a hundred different answers. Personally, I like the 100gr Shuttle T-Locks by Tight Point. I know a lot of guys on here use them as well. I also know a lot of guys that use a different one, and they like the broadhead they shoot. Can't fault them either, cause it gets the job done
I switched this year from the Thunderheads. Here's a write-up I did a few months back when I was trying out broadheads.
Quote:
I shot a group of 3 arrows with each broadhead (100gr Shuttle T's, 100 gr Muzzy MX4's, and 100gr Slick Tricks) at 20, 30, & 40 yards. I was shooting at a Yellow Jacket target, and even had a slight cross wind All broadheads I let loose, hit exactly where my 100gr field points do at each yardage. I was very pleased with the accuracy of all 3, and how well they flew. I was also pleased at the penetration I got frome each broadhead. They were all buried about the same.
There was only 2 things that bothered me, and both were fom the Slick Tricks:
1. They had a whistle to them while they were in flight...almost like a hiss sound.
2. The way the blades were interlocked was kinda hokey and a bit more difficult to assemble. Mind you, i've never used these before, so I might be wrong...but they looked as if they wouldn't stand up to much punishment if they hit something a little harder, like an elk rib or bone.
All in all though...a very good experience today. I will be shooting either the Shuttle T's or the MX4's this year!

My buddy shot a cow elk this season with them....It went about 40 yards and piled up, put a good hole in it and the blood trail was awesome!
I myself shoot Montecs in the 85 grain version and really like them so far. They have taken both a deer and an elk so far and held up great!

Re: Broadheads
MUZZY, Bad to the bone. I've shot them for years. They are tough and they fly well. I've been shooting the 75 grain 3 blades. They did the job quite well on a 290 lb (hanging weight) cow elk for me this year. KK

Re: Broadheads
I shoot the muzzy 100 gr. 3 blade. I did a few torture tests and was quite impressed.
Several complete pass through on 82 Subaru wagon door, got about 5 or 6 shots on two different muzzys before they were completely broken.
Shot the shoulder blade of a hereford we butchered 3 times with the same broadhead. The arrow broke before the tip.

Re: Broadheads
I was shooting Rock Mtn. Ironheads, but they quit making them.
With the step son now bowhunting, I decided to try the Thunderheads, which are more economical, and we are both shooting them very well, so I like the Thunderhead 100 grain.

Re: Broadheads
I've taken dozens of animals with the tightpoint shuttle t's....However, placement with any broadhead will do the trick..It's those things they call bones that sort out the good and bad ones..Get a head that makes it next to impossible for you to loose a blade...

Shuttle T's and Montec G5 - 100 grains. Both shoot just like a field point for me.

Re: Broadheads
I have heard nothing but good about the Shuttle Ts from a lot of friends who are very serious bow killers.
I still shoot Muzzy 3 blade 100 gr and haven't had any issues.
I may switch to the Shuttle Ts. They definately open a hole.
This is my buddies bull from this year. Very short tracking job.

Re: Broadheads
My wife and I both shoot shuttle 100 grain. I have killed four elk and five deer with them and I don’t believe there is a better broadhead out there. My wife shot a doe a few years ago with a 100 grain thunderhead and only had about 8” of penetration. This year her buck was slightly quartered towards her and she had a complete pass through. Same bow about the same range 35 yards. I also noticed better penetration on the targets with the shuttle’s, I think it has less drag then the thunderheads.

Re: Broadheads
Shuttle T's all the way. After a couple seasons with them, I don't think I'll be shooting anything else (for the time being). Have seen, and know of, somewhere in the neighorhood of 20+ animals killed with them...all with very good results. Seen a few from the Thunderheads as well and holy $%^& do those things HAMMER through bone! I've "heard" the Magnus heads are good too.
The only one's I would not recommend would be the G5 Montec's. They shoot just like my field tips, but put simply, they cut too "clean" of a hole. Seems like the bloodtrails get lost after about 100 yards or so with 'em.
Every broadhead will kill an animal if you put it in "the pocket", I'm concerned with the times that doesn't happen.
Off topic note: This year I learned a valuable lesson in WEIGHT. Over the next year I am going to be doing everything I can to find and shoot the heaviest arrow possible, within reason of course, and without sacrificing an enormous amount of speed or accuracy. I've seen what can happen when an arrow deflects, and with most of the new carbons coming in at less than 10 grains per inch the vast majority of folks, including myself, are shooting an arrow with a total weight of LESS than 400 grains. If and when you hit bone, I'm convinced, that light an arrow is simply unacceptable and WILL deflect, which in my case could have resulted in a lost elk this year (fortunately it didn't). Many "experts" recommend at least 500 grains, minimum. So, that's what I'm shooting for, we'll see how it pans out.

RM Ironheads, they still make the three blade version. I have seen them kill about 8 animals, all nice blood trails.

Re: Broadheads
100 grain Thunderheads.
Used to use the ones with the Cabelas name on them - -they worked just fine. Switched to thunderheads because the quality control on the last batch of Cabelas I bought over ten years ago left something to be desired (worked ok on elk though).

I will stick with the G5 for now, the cleaner the hole on entry means that there will be reserved power to blow right through a rib if needed. I have been told by more than a few hunters that the G5 leaves a nasty exit hole. It could be that I was miss informed ?
Anyone have first hand experience with the Montac G5? please post your good or bad results.
Thank you, Fishalot
