Default Stupid sonar question

I spent all day today and yesterday drilling holes in my boat :depressed: to install my sonar/gps. When I turned the unit on (LCX-15MT), the transducer started clicking rapidly. Is this normal? I've never heard the transducer make any audible sound on other people's boats. At least the gps locked on in less than 30 seconds  . It's going to be at least a week before I can get the boat in the water to see if the sonar really works :depressed: .

Thanks for any input,
James

My Raymarine does. I was standing at the rear of my boat on a cold winter day while mooching for steelhead. The subtle clicking noise was driving me nuts...couldn't figure out what it was for the longest time...Does it bother fish? Doesn't seem to. The yellow boat has yet to get skunked

Boy, now how's that for jinxing my next fishing excursion?

Thanks for the reply, guess I don't need to worry so much. Hey Mello, I grew up in Coos Bay (MHS class of 88). My parents still live there.......wish I did too :depressed: .

Careful running that X-15 out of water. I've heard a few times now that it screws up the transducer. Mine isn't working right and I'm wondering if that is the problem.

That's the transducer sending a ping, it's also your pickup. You may lose a signal if your underway and in deep water. By the time the signal bounces back your boat has left that area. Important note though you can damage your unit running it out of water.

On a positive note; You'll rarely notice the ping once your boat is in the water. Only on the calmest of water and quietest conditions. On a negative note; during these 'quiet' times, it'll drive you ******* looney!
