Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
Hi, my name is John and I am a tuna fisherman. I have admitted to being helpless and I am hopelessly addicted to tuna fishing.
Ok, you knew all that....
Post here your results for whackage and stackage of the longfins. I am trying to figure out where fish were caught and how many. I'll go first. The numbers later when I plug in the plastic jesus and pry the numbers out of it.
7/2 .. Bust. Made it to the fishing grounds NW of Depoe and the boat went T.U. Towed in by the Coast Guard about 25 miles.
7/3 .. McGyver .. fix da boat all day. One Coho at last light.
7/4 .. Happy birthday America. 4th of July started about 9 am for my mate and me. Huge grins and more fun than a one legged man at an *** kicking contest. I pulled 15 albacore in about 4 hours. Gregotis98 was there with Sailfish in his Reinell. Thanks for the excellent company Greg. We gave the CG 2 of our fish for their mess hall. I cant thank those guys enough for the tough job they do.
7/5 .. If once is good then twice is better. We went back with a few of our friends. Jen and Houston (Southpaw) fished and I drove the boat. They knocked 15 longfins and we had a ball.
Numbers when I get home and I am writing the story for the log. I should have some pictures posted before the end of the day on my mates thread.
Pilar - 30 fish in 2 days. All good grade 20 + pounds with one at 27 pounds. Green feathers, purple and black feathers, tiny green hex head and mexican flag feathers were the ticket. Changing the speed from 6.5 to 7.5 once in a while almost always resulted in a hook up.
Next???

Rod-man,
Let's go! You have exactly 16 hours to get your Dory to Depoe Bay! You can hurl just as well on the ocean as you can from your bed -- makes a heckuva a chum line as well.
I hope you're feeling better.

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
3 months ago, I knew nothing...green as a bean.
July 5 - One 11# tuna, Charleston Marina Dock B.
$1.75 lb.
The guy gave me the funniest look when I told him I didn't want it filleted. "I want to do it myself!".
My buddy bought one too...
We had our own mini-carking station at home, complete with sushimi and soy/wasabi and lots of barley pop.
I've got the boat, I've got the gear, and now I've carked and scarfed fresh tuna. Only one actual tuna trip from becoming a Dog.
Soooooon........
PS...Happy Birthday Rod. Get well, NOW!

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
7/5
Rj and I took the Wak'm & Stak'm out of Deopoe with the rest of the friends.
I could have sore I filled the tank, but our distance and time was limited...we still had 20 gallons when we returned.
We put 20 in the boat, and we were back about 1:00.
The boat is at the Servens this week, I need to replace the shifting kill switch, and replace most the electrical system, since it started back firing thru the carberator every once in awhile....grrrrrr......
The ocean is flat and no wind today....beautiful.

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
The Sea Jypzee (with Nancy as Captain of course), Ventured out 7/5 at 0' dark thirty to return with 24 dandy flyers. Again, great grade (20-25), and a hot bite at times with 3 triples. The poles long and outside did the majority of the bite getting for us, with purple and black the hot colors.
Sorry I didn't get the #'s to ya earlier Pilar. Things were hot and hectic, with Nancy on the flybridge (no radio), and us wading in blood. When I finally got a minute to wipe off, I grabbed the radio.
What a great day, and, as much as I hesitate to say it, the company couldn't have been better (even you Bob!)
Hope I didn't cheebob your thunder Nancy. I know you're gonna be busy at work for a bit, and just had to share!

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
Dat's ok Wildhawg!! Thanks for posting.
Ok, numbers inc now. I posted them in the thread UG started on us, but will do so again here.
We started fishing around 45.05 lat, and 124.37 long line. Continued running west, weaving back and forth till around 124.40 or thereabouts. Most of our hook ups were around 124.38 in and around the 45.02-45.04 area. Up on the flying bridge I could get a good view of the temp breaks, which was where the fish seemed to be hiding. Very few birds visible feeding. Lots of kelp in the rips, and a few sharks roaming the area.
Most of the bite was on Purple/Black clone/zurker. (one on each side). Had several hook ups on Mexican Flag clones on the hand lines.

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
We fished Saturday...basically the same areas as Pilar.....we ended up with 34 for the day...all nice grade....bite was solid on all that Pilar named plus 4" cedar plugs. We left biting fish.....and it was a hard thing to do.....until we hit the dock and the carking began.....
Fished with Booja 1 (So Cal transplanted tuna expert) and had two new guys on board. I think it is is safe to say we have converted two more people.

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
7/4 Sick in bed. Puking all day. Even more sick after checking Ifish to see everyone carking tuna.
7/5 Sick in bed. Puking all day. Now sick and mad that everyone is catching tuna but me!
7/6 Sick but alive. Wishing for a miraculous recovery so I can fish 7/7.
7/7 Even more sick. Finally give up and go to doc for "the good meds". It's 1pm and reading about the tuna carnage, still sick, and of course it's my birthday. Some birthday. :depressed:
All I can say is god help the first tuna that hits my hook this year! I might just drag him around for the entire day!

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
Well....Wed the 2nd, my son Skip and I took a client out for tuna. We crossed the bar at 5:30. The bar and ocean were flat. We set a course NW, and poured the coals to 'er. We had only gone about 2 miles when we hit the leading edge of a front  Next thing I knew, I was pulling the throttles back. Before long I was down to 11 knots, which didn't change. At about 30 out, I saw a temp break and throttled down. I immediately realized that this was not going to work.....I could hear everything downstairs crashing, including the TV in the master stateroom. Sooooo I had to make a call. As much as I hated to, I powered back up and deliberately over ran the fish so that we could troll downhill. Went beyond the 45/125 (54 miles) and started back S/SE. Long story short...had 10 takedowns for 4 fish Not good for a 13 hour trip. Ended up running in on the roll, parrallel to the sets....I was beat! Then there was these four guys that came over to the boat, and started arm twisting (thanks Fishplay & Threemuch)...So I finally gave in. We headed out Thurs. AM to travel NW into what appeared to be a repeat After throttling down to 10 knots, we took a quick vote, and decided to head south for salmon, which turned into a lot of fun, and some nice fish  .....Fri we stayed in, and Sat we slautered the Nooks. Lost a 40 plus at the net, brought in a 31,28,20,20,18, and two nice silvers.

Re: Tuna death toll, 7/4 7/5, how many>???
Today was a slow day for me...I was too busy watching Kujo and Ugly Green slaughter them. We only got 11 albacore plus a small silver. I am not going to go the rest of this week but with the weathermans help, I will hit it again next Tuesday!
Got to meet a bunch of Ifishers and Ifisher wannabies today...It was awesome!
