Saturday with Rabalo Bill - Garabaldi
On Saturday the 5th I was able to get out on the open water with Rabalo Bill. Our adventure started out with a bar crossing compairable to some of my days spent canoeing on Scouters Lake. It was a beautiful day with very little wind. The sea forcast was over stated and conditions were perfect.
After pulling and rebaiting pots around Twin Rocks  We headed North to the next point of land that jutts out of the coastline to bottom fish. The fish weren't very hungry but still managed to pick up a fish on about every short drift. So after about hour of bottom fishing we ended up with 6 black, 1 cabizon - which was my first, and a Sea Trout. If Bill gets a chance maybe he can post the picture of the cab.
Next we were looking for Salmon! We moved out to about 180' and baited up. Bill started with some crome and I baited up a cutplug blue label. I decided to put it out at 12 pulls into the ocean. So I drop it in and the story goes like this - Let see now, bait looks good with a open spin. So I count 2 pulls, 3, 4, 5 vis sure is good I can still see my delta diver 6 BAM! FISH ON! I saw it come up and just inhale my bait. That was cool!
I then proceeded to have fun feeding a dozen and a half to the little bait robbing, hook throwing short striking little buggers. Sounds like excuses but my landing ratio did improve once I started taking my eyes off the pole and give the fish a chance to eat it up to the first swivel  . Bill would say something like, " Kevin your pole is doing something funny". After landing a good number of unclipped fish Bill got into the keeper action with the biggest fish of the day, it was a coho around 8lbs.
We were getting low on bait so I switched over to a flasher and a hoochie. I had never seen one used before but wanted to give it a try. Rigged up a single 0 herring dodger with about 18" to the hoochie on a small delta diver and proceeded to hose off the deck and put my fish in the box. Bill says you got a fish. The rod was burried. We landed the nice hatchery fish and called it a wrap with 4 nice eating coho in the boat.
We landed something like 6 natives in a row and sorted through about 10 to keep 4. Checked the three pots on the way back in and ended up with 11 large keeper crab. Bill you are a great skipper and good company thanks for the great trip. It was fun day and if in the future you need any crew, let me know.
