Funny thing about worrying about bears like that when your out in the bush. I came back from overseas in 1969 and got stationed in Lakeside, Montana. I had heard all about the big bad bears so I got a 338 Win Mag to do my hunting with because they were in the area! Well after to many trips carrying around that big gun and never seeing one, I quit carrying it.
Then about 1984 I moved to Wasila, Alaska, actually north of there between it and Big Lake. Well, bear country again and of course this was serious bear country. I didn't go to the outhouse without a rifle for about 6 mos. Then it dawned on me that encounters with big bears are awfully rare! Of course the only one's you hear about are the encounters where someone gets mauled badly of killed, sometimes eaten! Wanna have some fun? Next camping trip take along a copy of "Alaska Bear Tales" and before going to bed, read a few stories out loud for everyone. Keep most of them up tending the fire all night! A friend did that to me in Alaska several months after I got there. We were camped in a rip stop nylon tent on the Little Susitna River. It was a long night. Since then I have learned to sleep at night. Any bear wants to take me on will get me rested!
