Default 150 Merc help...

I posted this on a boating site and pasted it here. Maybe somebody can help.

Severely smokey 1995 150 oil-injected 2.0 merc...

At least now I think it only does it after being stored tilted. When I moored it for three days up in Astoria, It started relatively smoke-free each morning. Just today after being stored for three weeks tilted, it smoked like a steam train and was rather embarassing. The smoke clears after several minutes of running. Other than that the thing runs out like a champ and only has 150hrs on it. I'm guessing excess oil is getting in there when tilted but have no idea why. Thanks in advance... Joe

Salmonator,

My friend has the exact same motor and has the exact same problem. He thinks he is flooding it. The motor was completely rebuilt last year and it rarely smoked as much as it does now. If you obtain some information, please pass it along.

thanks

Have you ever checked your reed valves? I had one that was cracked and created the same problem. Lots of smoke in low rpms but fine on step. Eventually the reed continued to crack and break until finally there was a noticable rough running sound. Not sure on the Mercs but the reed assembly on my Force is pretty easy to check. They are attached to the bottom side of the carbs. Just another idea to add to the mix.

Rod, it doesnt' smoke a lick once it's warm, low or high RPM's but I will check anyways. Thanks for the tip.

Seasquid, I let you know what I come up with... Joe

Salmonator,

From a friend.

I have had the same problem with excessive smoke after tilting the motor over night. Though I am not 100% certain of the cause I did find something that has help me correct the problem..
My boat has a oil injector which has a oil reservoir. The reservoir caps must be on tight during operations of the motor due to the build up of pressure needed in the reservoir. So what I have been doing is loosening the caps on the resorvoir releasing the pressure. Then tightening the caps again so pressure can build up when I go out again. This has worked well for me in reducing the smoking problem. My feeling is that when I store the engine in the tilt position and not releasing the pressue on the reservoir that there is still enough pressure which forces oil through the injector and into the carburator causing a very rich mixture.
This has helped me resolve my problem, hope it does your as well...

Good Luck,

Seasquid, thanks for the reply although I think I have myself talked in to going to premix and plugging off the injector. One less thing to go wrong 35 miles offshore and I can plug my kicker straight to the tank since I don't plan on going 4-stroke anytime soon.

On another site I was told that I have a faulty 2psi check valve just before the oil line enters the gas line. This could be your buddies problem too. I just don't know what the engine being tilted has to do with it. At pressure, a faulty check valve will let oil through while it is sitting UNLESS, like your buddy says, the pressure is relieved at the tank. The only problem I see with this is that if you forget to re-tighten then you won't be getting oil to the carb and I don't think the oil alarm will go off unless the tank reservoir goes dry (which it won't if oil is not forced out of it by pressure). Anybody have any thoughts about ditching the oil injection?? I know it will burn more oil at idle but how often am I actually at idle or just off idle?

EDIT: Just read the part about your buddy re-tightening the cap immediately. I'll try that tonight
