Heads or Hooves??
Actually it's heads or hind quarters...
When you hang your deer to skin, do you hang it by the head or back legs? (Of course, many times we have to skin it on the ground before the pack out...)
I use a gambrel (one I received as a gift, or more often from a green de-barked limb) and hang by the hind quarters to minimize hair on the meat before washing down. Just curious how many do it each way!

Man, am I the only odd one who hasn't converted? I hang by the neck and don't even cut the head off until I start carving on it!

Always hung by the head. The old man has done it this way for 50 plus years. If it was good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Re: Heads or Hooves??
I was a head hanger for 40+ years, but some years ago our deer camp was providing snacks to Gary Soule (sp) the big game bio from Prineville and a trooper. While they were munching, we started to string up a buck by the head and Gary came unhinged. He swore that a large quantity of cerebrospinal fluid would drain from the head into the neck and forequarters if we hung it by the head, and that the meat would be of lesser quality as a result.
We expressed some doubt, (OK we laughed at him) so he grabbed a meat saw and decapitated the buck. Maybe a quart of fluid with a consistency somewhere between slime and snot dribbled out over the next few minutes. We hang head down now.
Gary, I'm sorry we doubted you! If you're on the board, I hear that your boy is fighting in the desert these days. May God keep him safe and speed him home.

Re: Heads or Hooves??
There will always be a small percentage of the population that reels a spinning reel backwards while the reel is on top of the rod, same goes for those few who will hang by the head.
By the hooves for me if I have a chance to hang it

Re: Heads or Hooves??
Never hung one myself. Always drop to my knees and skin it on site. I carry a small sheet of plastic when on dusty east side. Head off, halves, and onto pack frame even if its 200 yds. Let halves hang in tree to cool, change meat sacks 1st night to keep clean and have been boning to coolers before leaving camp last few times.
Many of us do operate similar to the ways we were raised. Biggest point ever made to me was to get it cooled ASAP, heat and contamination are the spoilers. (also keep the insects off)
Dream big tonight.

Hindquarters. Always figured that the blood running out the neck is better than having it settle into the hams.

Re: Heads or Hooves??
I've heard that hanging by the head is popular in some parts of the South and eastern US.
I use the Butchers method. Skin out the hocks on the tail gate or ground and hang with a gambrel.

Re: Heads or Hooves??
we use to hang em buy the HQ but we were shown a easy trick to skining them by hanging them by the head. so now we hang all our animals by the head unless it is a big one that we want mounted.

Re: Heads or Hooves??
Head down, butt up. That way the head can come off after the skinning job. The head comes out first when I go back to the truck for the pack frame. The head is my id that the deer is mine. It gets locked up in the cab. Cut the deer in half and the front falls onto the pack frame. Back half stays where it is for the return trip. Front half is heavier so you want to pack it out first anyway.
