Default Seconds between swells?

I got a question for all you salty sailors. I have spent most of my time in fresh water and based my boat purchase on my use at the time. My inboard jet is great in the rivers and bays. One day I got tired of all the garbage and zipperlip threads that seem to pop up on the main board so I decided to spend more time here. Last year I got my feet wet by crossing the CR bar and slamming salmon out at the spark plug. I did about half a dozen trips following the advice from this board and limited my boat every trip and had a wonderful time.

I live a lot closer to Newport than Ilwaco so this year I started asking questions about Newport. I have hooked up with a couple of you guys for trips and have learned a great deal. I took my boat out of Newport twice this year for Salmon and have loved every trip. The latter trip didn't produce any fish but it did give me a little more sea time under the healm. I am pretty limited with my boat on when I can come out to play and how far out I can go. I plan in the future to sell my sled and purchase a salty boat but until that day comes, I want to skipper my sled out when I can.

The forecast thus far this year has usually been 6 to 8 seconds apart between the swells. Is this common or do they ever predict a longer period. The two times I have crossed the Newport bar the seconds apart has called for 6 or 7 seconds but the swells never really did seem that close together. Is it one of those things that you find out when you get there or can you rely on the predicted ocean conditions? When does it get "unsafe" to be out in a 19 foot sled?

Sorry for the long post but I am trying to get as much info as possible so I can make a better call when deciding to head out. I praise you guys for all the help that you give out. It's nice to see people at the ramps and on the water and everybody is very friendly and helpful to one another. I have never seen a group of people in my life so eager to help other people out in the middle of a salmon bite. I guess I am just used to all the river salmon junk I have put up with for years. My only regret thus far is not doing a TA meeting or hooking up with you guys at a fish camp to swap stories and share a barley pop or two. Three cheers for the Salty Dogs
