Default OK Winers, I need your help again

My wife's birthday is in less than a month and I was able to find the bottle of wine I was looking for thanks to a tip from an Ifisher on a previous post. It's a Joseph Phelps Insignia 2001 - apparently a special bottle of wine (or I got totally suckered).

Now a special girl on her special day drinking a special bottle of wine needs to sip it from a special wine glass.

I've done a little research in the last few weeks and have learned that the size and shape of a glass can actually improve the flavor of wine.

What are your favorite glasses for drinking wine? This wine is a blend, but is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon.

I usually drink from a 10 oz. tumbler I got from Crate and Barrell.

Anyhow...what wine glass do you love?

http://www.wineglasses.com/

Riedel makes some very nice glassware that is specific to the varietal your sipping and sniffing.

You can also stick your head in any of the local Zupans stores and talk to their wine stewards. Knowledgeable and they sell some nice glassware.

For big reds, like cab, I like a big glass. Riedel vinum is a mid range series for like 12-20 a glass. I like their burgundy series for most big reds, Cabernet, Zinfandel, Barolo, Nebbiolo, Barbaresco and of course, Burgundy.

The big glass isn't so you can split a bottle without refills. A little wine can be swirled in the glass with maximum oxygenation. It also changes where the wine hits your tongue.

Do a search or Riedel Vinum, and pick either their burgundy or bordeaux series.

I steer clear of that "O" series stuff. It is a fad, and the stem serves a purpose. It keeps your grubby mitts of the glass, where you will leave nasty, greasy fingerprints, and heat up the wine.

I'm no snob, my wife taught me all this. And the best part is that it is completely socially acceptable to drink my favorite wines (big italian reds) out of any glass you want, including stemless cylinders. So you are still cool drinking from your 10oz tumbler.

There's a wine bar in Oregon City that has some friendly and knowledgeable proprietors. My wife and I meet up with friends there every Thursday night for our night out. I've seen some attachments that fit on the end of the bottle that breaths the wine and measures the pour. If you are interested in knowing more about the place then PM me.

I'm with Uhmw, I'm a Mason Jar guy, I'm only picky about my beer glasses.

Alright, not true, but I am VERY picky about my beer glasses. For reds like a Cabernet, I like a really large high sided glass with a smaller opening. Not the ones where the sides continue straight up. I think the smaller opening focuses the bouqet more, much like a pilsner glass, while the high sides allow for primo oxygenation, which for reds just enhances that aroma... I prefer a thicker stem because I have meaty hands, and the thin ones just make me nervous.

As was mentioned before though, hop into a wine store, or a specialty glassware place and ask 'em, they're wicked knowledgeable about such things.

Definitely serve chilled, some claim room temp, but room temp in Europe is a little different than room temp here. Sounds like a sweet sweet birthday. Well played by the way, I'm sure the wife will love it.

Big glass for reds, never more than 1/3 full. Remember the 30/30 rule, white's come out of the fridge 30 minutes before you drink them, reds go in the fridge 30 minutes before you drink them.

Macy's carries Waterford Crystal with a "Mondavi" collection that's surprisingly affordable.

I have two favorites. One is a smaller glass from Lenox looks very similar to the current Timeless Wine Glass. Ours is a bit older and only 7 1/2" versus 8"

The other is the Tiffany Classic All Purpose - this is a larger glass and can also double as a water glass at a formal setting.

Personally I really like the Lenox, it has the chirp of fine crystal and rings like a subtle church bell for quite some time.

Thanks, all. I actually got into contact with the artist through his website and he told me what glasses he used in the painting. I'm hoping to be able to track down a couple of those...
