Had a very fun hunt this year, lot's of good friends showing up every few days. For us that were starting to get tired and wanting more and more to sleep in a little bit later each day it always brought a new wave of energy to get back out there.
Went out for a solo trip as I like to do and sat down in the middle of a timber patch and just listened for about 20 min. Started to do some cow calls and heard this guy do a small bugle. He didn't sound aggresive so I waited to see if he would come to the calls, after about 45 min. of back and forth calling he closed the distance to about half and then I could tell he was starting to move further out.
I figured he must have cows with him and started the go after him. Every time he bugled I would run towards him then wait for the next bugle or grunt then move foward. soon I could here him raking trees and used this for cover as I moved forward. Then all of a sudden I could see some cows about 25yrds away I froze and scanned the area no bull. I moved acouple of more feet and saw what had to be the bull but could only see his body.
Then the cows all started to take off and I could see his rack as he turned his head to watch them leave, I pulled back and sent one thru him at 30 yrds.
Was able to quarter him up and get back to camp and get a few volunters to help pack him out then had a night of good food and beaverages to end the day.
Can't wait for the late season blacktail hunt.
