Re: Caving Great photo.. Halloween ?
WOW
What a story
That was well worth the read, now I think I will go to bed and get some sleep
I have never had the desire to go caving and I sure don't now.

Re: Caving Great photo.. Halloween ?
I just finished up the story. Yipes.
I got really freaked out in a cave once, though nothing like what was described.
When we caved down in Belize a few years ago, we caved this fairly infrequently visited cave called "Closing Jaw" where you had to belly crawl through the "mouth" opening. We had decided out of the 4 or 5 caves we were going to visit, that this would be a night caving expedition. So once the sun went down, we hiked back into the jungle with our guide, got to the opening and started preparing.
Much like his deal, the opening was really small going in, and opened up once you got in there. I got volunteered to be the first person in, I was one of the only guys, and figured what the heck, I'll go ahead and blaze the trail. I had a headlamp on and the entrace was just pitch black.
The bottom of the cave entrance was littered with sharp rocks, and being that I have a relatively large soft underbelly... I decided to lay down on my back and scoot across them with my heels. So I start in on my back, and the ceiling is about 4-5 inches from the tip of my nose the whole way In. Started opening up a bit about 2-3 feet in. Not being a big fan of unfamiliar caves and small dark places, I was looking around quite a bit as we saw lots of creepy crawlies outside before we went in. On one of my sweeps, as I came back across at 12 o' Clock, I came face to face with a spider. The size of a Basketball. Literally. 4-5 inches from my nose.
My nice deep and sultry baritone voice became Mariah Carey'esque, and this fat man has never moved so fast in his life. Everyone outside said it was like some horror film -- just a scream, then as fast as can be, my legs disappeared into the cave. lol.
Naturally I was shaking, and as I glanced around the inside of the cave opening, there were probably a half dozen of these buggers inside on the larger opening of the cave. I had been rudely introduced to the Belizean Cave Spider. One of the biggest spiders I've ever seen in my life. Solid black body, SUPER long, THICK black legs. Just *****. Creepiest part was their eyes glowed in the light of your headlamps... still sends shivers up my spine.

Anyway, moral of the story. Evil nasty gross things live in caves. People should not go in them. Nice Story though, interesting read, I take heart that at least I was able to identify mine.

Re: Caving Great photo.. Halloween ?
I found myself in a small cave once 'back in the day' (I also found myself in a decommissioned nuclear missile silo in west Texas late one Sunday night, but that's another story). Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin is a hike-n-bike natural park cutting through the south end of town; there's Barton Creek at the bottom and canyon-like walls going up each side. There are a few caves down in the area, notably Airmen's Cave which has been thoroughly explored. The cave I went into was not Airmen's.
We'd found a small passage in the side of the canyon, up some fifty yards from the trail. Curiously, the passage was shaped almost perfectly like a tube some twenty yards long. A crew of us and no gear to speak of except for a couple of flashlights made our way one at a time into the tube and into the room at the end. We sat around a bit and did what college kids do. A few of the more adventurous among us (not me) tried to squeeze a bit farther into the passage. Odd angles of rock and such that probably required way more skill than any of us possessed prevented the party from making it more than a few yards past the small room we were in.
The whole time I was in there, I was uncomfortable. When I wasn't looking around the room or at my cavemates, I was staring out the tube at the daylight. I didn't freak out (like I did when I was squeezing between the beam and the furnace return duct in the crawlspace at my last house) but I was very happy to be back in sunlight and fresh air when we emerged.
Cavers are nuts and cavers that take diving equipment and dive in the waters found in caves are absolutely insane.
Reading the story (even if it was fictional) and seeing the pictures - never before have I felt sick like that just reading about someone else's experience. The passage through Floyd's Tomb? You gotta be kidding me. Great adventure for those who are into the kind of thing but no thank you sir. I'll stick to something safe like bungee jumping.

This will give you really good deep dark dreams.. of being stuck!!..
just think, yea crawled into that tight spot on your own free will, only to get stuck & perish. Rescue, would be day's away or NONE... hmmmmmm...
Or sitting up in a tree stand at O'dark thirty, hearing things above you or below you, that you can not see... Just watching you, waiting to Pounce & chomp it's fangs on your neck line.
great story, for all to read.. Things that go bump in the night Or Chomp!
BIG spider.. based on that scale on photo.. its least 4 foot spread!!.. with fangs the size of your thumb.. Yikes

Re: Caving Great photo.. Halloween ?
Wow, that was intense. Where is the rest of the story, though? Did anyone else get to the last page, and when you click next, it just takes you back to the top of the last page? What happens when Joe and him return to the cave? I've got to know now! That is probably the most intense story I have ever read. My stomach is still in knots!

Re: Caving Great photo.. Halloween ?
Anyone else think that page 11 will never get written?
It is either that the three guys never left the cave, or that it is too good of a scare story without more info. Any kind of conclusion would spoil it, really, since the whole deal is the unknown.
Now, to go find a cave such as was described... We know it's a ways from a town, close to a motel, in the woods, and well explored.

that is great writing...... so is this.
http://web.archive.org/web/200501171...ofdarkness.pdf
same FICTIONAL story except this one is copyrighted.
Cool concept though...... add some pictures and change the story a little bit and you have a great thriller.
So sleep in peace tonight.....nothing is coming out of the cave to eat you during the while you sleep......unless I'm covering this up because I'M THE MONSTER...MUUHAAAAA HAAAAAAAAA
