Default Muzzleloader load?

I have been playing with different loads with my smoke pole, and 100 gr. of 777 ffg loose and a 300 grain bullet seem to fly the best by far. Pardon my ignorance, but is this sufficient for elk?

Heck yes...

If by chance you shoot a knight bighorn I'd suggest a load for ya.

150 grains of Triple 7 pellets
295 grain Powerbelt bullet.
Musket Cap

We can shoot 1.5-2" 3 shot patterns at 100 yards with it.

That combination out of my 2 Bighorns is the best that I've found, it works just as good out of my other 3 buddies knights as well...

Thank you for the replies. I usually shoot a bow, but drew the any season elk tag in Washington and have little knowledge of the muzzleloader game. I did get a knight bighorn, and just becuase I felt the need for a new rifle (I guess my Ruger 7mm needed to have company) I bought a new Tika T3 in 300 wsm for the rifle portion of the tag.

I've only elk hunted once with black powder, but did have an opportunity at a really big cow at about 45 yards. My load was a 310 gr slug behind 120 gr pyrodex. The bullet went thru the front shoulder blade and was resting against the hide on the following shoulder. She only went 30 yards. The load your talking about is little different than what I was using, and is more than sufficient.

To put it into perspective, the last blacktail I shot at 80 yards I shot head on and it did an absolute back flip. The bullet penetrated just above the sternum and ended up about an inch into the back left ham... Needless to say he never got back up...

Well I got a chance to answer my own question. Opening day I got a shot at a 4x4 bull at 120 yds. Both lungs bullet on the other side of hide. My first elk with a smoke pole.

Nice work, 120 yards is a long muzzleloader shot.
