I talked to John also. Very disappointed. He said they had just found a nice temp break about 24 miles offshore when the engine died. Went to restart but nothing. Tried to over-ride the solenoid to the starter and still nothing. John was stumped so he called the Coasties (with that nice new radio of his), and they were towing him in as I was talking to him.

He still hopes to get Pilar on dry land and figure it out in time to get out again tomorrow but who knows. Knowing John he'll figure it out and be slaying bullets tomorrow!

Anyone in the area should give him a ring on his cell.

Back on dry land and fretting over what might have caused the problem. John is full of praise for the professionalism, skill and responsiveness of the Coast Guard and their "47". Just wanted everyone to know that he's out of harm's way.

Glad that all is well. I showed up at Depo at 0530 this morning and no John. I went out anyway and found the weather building a little. Had two relatively green folks with me so changed plans and salmon fished. Tried to raise John on the radio but no response. Thought maybe he bagged it too. Tomorrow is another day! Pete, can I get ZJohn's number from you? I appreciate it!

I tried to get on earlier to tell the Pilar story. Sorry John I couldn't get on in The Dalles. He just got to the temp break and saw bait balls and birds piles with fish at 180' when he went down. That's the deal.

Just got off the phone with John. Bad ground wire might be the culprit. He's just now putting things back togeather and heading to the dring for a trial run. If all goes well he's looking at Saturday for sure for tuna and mabee the "Coho Man" tomorrow and Friday due to weather. News at 8:00. OuT

So glad to hear that ya'll made it back in safe and sound. Hopefully you're able to get the problem resolved quickly for another run soon. I MAY be up for some tuna chasing by the weekend if ya'll are going to be around. A lot will of course depend on the weather.

Default 7/2 Pilar update

Message from John about 11:30 am: "Returning from tuna fishing on the end of a Coast Guard tow, due to motor trouble." He didn't say whether he'd found fish. Not sure what level of distress was encountered, but all sounded safe and the Coasties are rendering assistance. I'll post more when I have a chance to talk to John again.

7/03 6:45 PM UPDATE

Just got off the phone with the Pilar, Jen was driving the boat, north out of Yaquina, and John was landing a Coho. They were ocean testing the Pilar for a run at tuna tommorrow. Sounds like he has got all the bugs worked out.

He also asked if anyone else was planning on making it down Friday.

Peace, Tom
