Best property boundary map
OK so some of the area I want to hunt for elk has some spot in it that border or surround the GI ranch (they are stickler for trespass) and I need to find the best map for determining that I am on BLM land. So What do you all recommend? I have a fire map for the area and a few toppo maps of the area but I think before the elk hunt in November I need to pick up a land use map or BLM map thanks for the info guys rp

Re: Best property boundary map
Whatever map you end up using it sounds like you will need to be using GPS coordinates. The worst areas are the one mile blocks of private/BLM where there is only one foot to step across.
Good luck out there.
(Quote)In effect, the GI Ranch land is interspersed, in checkerboard fashion, with occasional sections of BLM land. The public may, without permission, enter and remain on BLM land to hunt and for other recreational purposes. The GI Ranch, however, is private; entry is by permission only.

Re: Best property boundary map
blm 30 minute x 60 minute surface management map. best source is http://store.usgs.gov/ you want one with the most recent update. if in doubt about a certin access point, go to the blm or usfs district office for the map area, durring working hours. cross your fingers that a field person is in.

Re: Best property boundary map
I hit the link, went to my area, hit TOPO, then sucked it up until it showed the BLM blocks. Kinda useful. Printing it would be hard to do. Need to surf a bit on the page to do this I guess.

Re: Best property boundary map
not every unit has a surface management map, some are out of print. but the BLM district maps have most of the property ownership on them, just not in as much detail.

Re: Best property boundary map
Does anyone know if it is legal to cross corner to corner on those patchwork blm pieces? I was speaking with a lawyer about this, and his reasoning is that a corner is infinate, and that although your boots may step from public ground to public ground, you are technically occupying the private ground just by aerially passing over it (and therefore trespassing)
I commented that my reasoning is how can you be trespassing and not trespassing at the same? Also, I asked if I am trespassing by just waving my arm over a fence that borders private ground? He just said, "you don't want to have to pay for a jury trial to find out"
Anybody know if this has ever been brought to trial?

Re: Best property boundary map
if you find checker board public/private that is posted on the access points, the only safe way to access the public land is with wtitten permission from the private land owner. if the access in not posted or fenced, talk to the public land manager for who owns the private property. crossing at the corners is trespassing, but sometimes the corners are not at a point, they are offset on a section line, if you know this point, it is legal to cross between sections. but you better be able to prove the access

Re: Best property boundary map
If you are coming into Burns, stop by the county courthouse and go to the GIS office for a map...they will print you off anything you want at a reasonable price. I've used their services (when it was located at the BLM office) and have been quite happy with their maps. Just an idea...

Re: Best property boundary map
Be really careful, as the blm has and is selling /trading little sections of land and the maps available are old.I had a land owner put a boulder in the middle of a blm road and when i removed it with some tricky knots and hard work, he threatened me, and the argrument escalated until i threw him in a creek, after he took a punch at me. After spending a day and the gas to go to baker the blm manager came out with the sherrif and told him he was in the wrong. Still its always your responsibility to ensure your right......

Re: Best property boundary map
Thanks for the info I do not intend to hunt the patchwork area of the GI ranch that is a pain It would be nice to be able to gain access to the ranch for my Cow hunt but I am sure they have an outfitter. I am going to be hunting around the outside of the ranch from what I can tell I will be one or two ridgelines from there land and I just want to be safe rp
