I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
I don't like to go out in the ocean, and it makes me jealous when you guys go out and catch fish. Especially my salmon.
So, since I am scared to go, you can't go either. Sounds fair to me.
As the owner of ifish, I am enforcing a rule that the bar is officially closed to crossing. If I catch you out there with fish, I will confiscate them immediately!
It's not fair!
You know, I have been trying SO HARD to get my kids to go on roller coasters with me, and Andrew said it best.
"Mom, I really want to go so badly, and I just can't make myself do it. I want to go more than you know, but I'm afraid to. If you made me, I would yell at you the whole time in line, but once on it, I think I would have a blast!"
I can so relate to that, about the ocean. I want to be out there. Ocean Blue told me about the dolphins and the whales, and the beauty of the big blue. It haunts me at night when I go to sleep. It sounds so beautiful that I want to cry!
I know that I would cry at such beauty! I want to gooooooooo!
But every time Bill gets near the bar, I hear the dory fishermen who tell me that open sleds are dangerous in the ocean, and should not be allowed. I hear the owner of the rocket, tell me that jet sleds are built so that if they take a wave wrong, they will dig down, and dive into the wave and sink. I think about the people on the charter that lost their lives, experienced, and supposedly aware...
I want, so badly to believe that the ocean is calm today, like Bill tells me. I want to believe that the ocean is not changeable, and that 15 minutes or an hour after we get out there, the conditions won't change so drastically that we can't get in.
I want to not believe in rogue waves.
When I fish the jaws with Bill, I do OK, but I'm constantly watching the waves, and it freaks me out when you see a boat, then the swell swallows it up, and you don't see the boat... Makes me want to go back to flat water.
Is there ever any hope for me?
I don't believe in astrological signs, but the one thing that hit home to me is the saying that Pisces, (which is me) have a love hate relationship with water. That says volumns about me!
I'm a risk taker in so many things. I like so many wild things, yet the tides of the ocean, and the crossing of the bar hold me back like nothing else.
Is there ever hope for me? Does someone have to tie me to the chair and take me screaming, out to the ocean before I look around me in awe, catch bottom fish, and tuna, and salmon and marvel at the creatures of the sea?
I've been out before, on charters, and I've been OK.... but the last two years, this panic about it has set in. Is it old age?
Help me to get young again! I want to sail the seas!!!!-- but I can't! :depressed:
Yesterday, Pete went out, and he told me how fishy it was out there. :depressed: No fair.
Jen

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
It was nasty ... I lied. The waves were sooo wet. The sun was brutal. The wind was, well ... oh just look! You wouldn't have wanted to be there! However, this pic was taken at the calmest moment of the day. By noon the swells were up to about 4 feet and the wind was picking up and it was time to start heading in.

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Probably WAY too rough for the Pacific Mistress! I think I probably would
have had water sloping over the swim platform and everything!!
Most assuredly not a day for the faint of heart!

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Last time my wife was out with me in Tilamook. I made her cry because she was scared. We were fishing for fall chinook just outside the jaws on the south jetty. I couldnt slow my troll enough to intice a strike. So I thought we would head south to do some bottom fishing. The boat climbed a couple big swells, where the boat looks like its going to fall. She got scared and started to cry. Iam now a insesitive ass in my own house. I understood but I got upset about her crying.

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Jennie- Toni is in the same boat (so to speak). She loves it in the Sea of Cortez but the Pacific is just to bumpy. She'll go if I can find her a day that looks like Pete's picture though.
How 'bout you on a day like that? Invitation is always open on Miss B Haven (not zactly your open ocean sled, but she seems to work fine).
There's some mighty fine flat days in August..well normally there are anyway.
PS- Closing the Ocean is NOT funny.

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
I agree, Jennie, the ocean should be closed. It has cost me waaaaaay too much money!
I will support any legislation you want to put forward in that endeavor.
If we can't get it closed, could we at least make it a tax write-off?

Try it on a big boat, on a nice day first Jennie. Take Miss B up on his offer someday when it's flat. Slowly work your way out in worse conditions.
The ocean is a beautiful place with all kinds of natural wonders that very few have the opportunity to see. Get out and enjoy!

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
I have plenty of spirit of adventure... I love roller coasters, and drifting down treacherous rivers... Just have a thing about the ocean. I think I made a mistake admitting it here, though!
Looking for love in all the wrong places...

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Jen, Buy a bunch of Jimmy Buffet CD's and listen to them over and over and over. If they dont toughen your gutt for the sea, nothing will.
When I was a kid I would get sick every time, and there were many, but I wanted to be with my grandfather, and catch fish, so I went anyway. Eventually I got used to it. I later went ten years without a trip to the ocean and got sick the first time out again..it too passed with repeated trips. Maybe vomiting and severe gastrointestinal malfunction doesnt bother me as much as others, Im certainly not embarrased about it other than that time I chunky-soup'd into my own rubber boot. Not a pleasant sensation between the toes. Am I being to elaborate? Sorry. Good luck!

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Truth be told, I've been on the ocean about a dozen times... Even in high seas, with people cookie'n it all around me, I've never lost my chips.
I don't get sea sick. I just get SCARED!
I think the time that Bill and I got caught in that ship's wake, and all the boats around us headed for safety, and Bill wouldn't budge had an impact on me. It was like, "Bill? See boats. See boats leave due to large ship wake. Bill? Bill move boat, also, because of large ship wake."
Bill didn't budge, and having to watch that six foot wall of standing wave come at me DID panic me. I didn't cry. I just fell silent. We did alright, he was right about that. It just wasn't fun. It was SCARY.
Bill is very good on the ocean. I have been told my seasoned people that he is one of the safest captains they have been with. I believe that, but.... but... Bill! All the other boats are pulling anchor and getting the heck out of here!
Oh me of little faith, and a certified member of the weenie dogs.

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
Hey Jennie,
Wonder how many sportfishers die on the ocean as a percentage of the total that go, versus how many drivers get killed on the road as a percentage of the total. I'll bet you would be susprised. I would bet that driving your car to the store is more dangerous than going out sportfishing on the ocean. I'll even bet that lots of other things that you dont think a second thought about are more likely to kill you than doing an ocean trip, especially if you pick your days and your captain carefully.
Just a thought.

Re: I am officially closing the ocean for fishing
It's all about frame of mind! The wifey got me to fly to Oahu last year and I was a nervous wreck basket case. Yet I also turn into a nervous wreck basket case if I DON'T get 30 miles offshore in my little 20' boat often enough
