Default ONE piece of Steelhead Advice

Okay, Here's a scenario. If you were on your deathbed, and could leave ONE piece of advice for up-and-coming Steelheaders, sons or daughters, etc...

What would your one piece of advice be?

Keep your line in the water, you'll catch more fish that way.

My one piece of advice would be to not get discouraged and give up, but keep trying! It will eventually happen!

Learn to read the water....any cracker will get one eventually if they are casting where the fish are hanging out.

Always let your offering sit for a few seconds at the end of your drift before you reel back in. Steelhead will sometimes follow a bait and take it after it stops moving.

If the person closest to you while fishing gets hung up in a tree/hangs up on the opposite side of the river/fishes with line that resembles a bed spring/casts without ever looking beside or behind....MOVE! Your ear could be his next catch!
I know thats more than 1 but I think we have multiple personalities in me so actually that's only 1 apiece!!

Don't be a <petunia>.
??????

Just have fun being outdoors!

Old style Oakies all the way. Eggs when that doesn't work. Or maybe orange corkies. But, don't forget a lure now and then (when it's clear). Yarn sometimes. Maybe more lead, to slow down the drift. Just throw the entire box after them.
You will never snag an ugly rigging. The ones that you think are the perfect fish-getters will be lost on the first cast!

Good luck

1. Fish where the fish are
2. Give them what they want (observe what works where)
3. Expect a fish on every cast (be ready)
4. Fish every cast (even the bad casts will sometimes work)
5. The early bird gets the worm (go early stay late)

Besides having a great time fishing all of your favorite spots, pack out what you pack in and pack out what others have left behind. Leave the bank better than you found it.

On my death bed???? Ha like thats ever gonna happen ( yes thats right I am gonna live for forever) let alone me having kids now that's a scary thought.. However if such a senario were to transpire this is what I'd say..
"Son i've made a life, out of reading people faces, knowing what the cards are by the way they held their eyes.... Oh wait thats a kenny rogers song isn't it?? I am sorry, No wait don't leave" "Fishing huh? well back in the good old days they used to say you could walk across the rivers on the backs of salmon but that was long before my time." " Whats really important if you want to have good fishing you gotta make sure that you take good care of the rivers." Endure that there are fish to fish for tomorrow" And Son when you are in the position I am in now and all throughout you life teach this to others. When there are no fish, the fishing sucks"
"Cough cough wheeeeezeee cough" One more thing.. it's really important" M----M-----M------M------------------------------------------------

In cast you didn't catch it the whole M--- thing is the heart moniter graph

With low water conditions, cover water, move dont stand in the group fishing the same hole. The river is big and you need to spread out you will catch more fish. fish different runs and holes, just because there is not 10 guys fishing that hole dosent mean fish are not there. waist deep and walking speed water swing flys on a fly rod especally in the summer. explore your waters. I have fished areas and caught fish so the next day try some new water or stream. Handle fish carefully and release all wild fish even Trout. and like Rob said Love your rivers and leave it better than you found it. Take out your trash and any other trash you can have fun

Learning to read the water is definately a key but also have fun and be CONFIDENT! Have faith that you will catch fish. Fish with the gear you have the most faith in but dont be afraid to try something new as well and pound the water. Keep at it and you will be rewarded!
