Bug, don't let it bother you as I went out last Saturday for the first time and it was not a problem at all. Just stay away from the end of the North jetty as the rollers tend to break there and you don't want to break off and drop onto the shallow rocks. It is an easy run and you should be fine. Just use common sense and good judgement and remember that safety comes first.

I was told the fish were at about 150' of water but did not find them. We lost a chinook near the boat in about 125' of water.

Good fishing and *Fish only bite wet hooks*

For Folks who are spending the entire week out chasing fish, don't forget about the fine print concerning "6 salmon in 7 days". If the salmon fishing heats up again, you don't want to end up with a ticket.

BugF... pls watch your tides this weekend... just be careful as you have some large ebb tides in the morning (Friday low @ 10:20am at -.5' for a change of 7.8 feet.)

Plan your trip accordingly. Check with the CG for a bar report before you go. Have a safe and productive trip.

Do your homework Keith. There is a lot of behind-the-scenes research that is done before any bar crossing. Make sure you've got a VHF radio, GPS, and all the safety gear.

As stated by others, check your tides, sunrise/sunset, ocean forecasts, weather trends, etc. before you even get there.

Good luck and I'm sure you'll bang some fish!

I would like to glean a little more on timing bar crossings relative to the tide. Did a search on the subject and found that safest bet is to cross 1 hour after low slack and return at high slack. That seems easy enough. However, for this weekend that would result in an afternoon outing when the wind should be strongest. My question is then about crossing at less than optimal times and what is an acceptable time frame with large ebb. If I leave this Saturday at 6:30, a few hours into the ebb the bar should be ok, right. But then I am committed to staying out because the bar should get rougher for the 4 –5 hours, or is it only the last 2 hours of ebb that should be avoided. So how do decide to make the early run to avoid the wind and stay out, or to do the safest crossing and potentially fight the wind?

Does anyone have the numbers for the bar conditions?

FallRiverGuy,

Garibaldi -- (503) 322-3234
Newport -- (541) 265-5511

Good luck -- As long as the swell isn't up, which it doesn't look to be this weekend, I frankly wouldn't worry too much about the tides in Newport. Tillamook is another story, that might be more of a timing deal.

I would much rather sneak out on a lumpy bar than put up with the freakin' wind all afternoon. I'll be blasting over the bar about 5:30-6 if you want to hail me on 78. It will be a parade, no doubt about it.

FRG,

As seasquid said, the Newport bar is very tame and timing is not nearly as critical as Tillamook or the CR. Deeper channel, and less river flow make for a tame bar in comparison. I have only a couple times seen it fairly nasty and even then it was manageable. I would start watching the tide if there were a big swell coming in, or a large spring runoff coming down the river. Otherwise, almost always it is a go anytime the wind/swell is decent enough that you would want to be out past the bar anyway. I generally find the ocean conditions to be worse than the bar itself.

The CG generally keeps an eye on it, and will often restrict 16' and under craft or 22' and under. My 21'er has never been restricted on a day I thought I wanted to go out. However, the GC doesn't watch minute by minute, and things can change unexpectedly. So, it is up to the captain to have a good look going out and coming in and make the judement call for themselves.

This Saturday the timing will be fine at 6:30 am given the current forecast, and I wouldn't worry about getting back in at any particular time. If you did decide to come in at say 9/10/11 or so, I would just mosey toward the bar and have a look. Should be fine, and you can head on in.

Hey FRG, like Orca said, the number one concern is the combination of a big ebb/low water, and a big swell. When the swell gets about 8 ft or greater, they only need a little bit of help to become breakers, and that "help" is a stong ebb & low water. But with low / moderate swells (4-6 ft) the same big ebb will create a washing machine effect, like steep standing waves. In this stuff, just take your time, slow & steady; it's not a race. Stay in the middle on out the buoy line. As always, never cut it close around the jetty tips & stay off of those close-in reefs N & S of the jetty.

Look here "Boating in Oregon Coastal Waters" for the areas that Mark Mc mentions that you should avoid. Some folks will cut around the ends of the N. or S. Jetty and start fishing, or they will be just sitting there sight-seeing. I will often see boats sitting just off the Jetty over the reefs even when the swell is big. Saw one off the North this last Sunday and the ocean was pretty angry that day.

When this guide says that the swell can break unexpectedly in these areas, you can count on it happening sometime, and every once in a while the sea will make believers of those who are caught unaware.

Also, forgot to say I should be there the 5th only. We should try to stay in touch. I can be found on 16 or 78 as Orca. I may call any and all IFishers on 78 to see how things are going. Will probaly depart the dock at about 6:30.

Bug-Flicker, sounds like you will probably cross the bar on Fri, but if not, I will be available to run out there, have a look with you, and explain anything over the radio. Also, email me direct if you want a rundown of the bar, or email your phone # and I will call you.

Same offer to anyone else who wants to try the bar the first time on 7/5 at about 6:30.
