Newport crabbing??
Some friends are heading over to Newport for the weekend to do some crabbing. I told Him I would try and find out if it has been any good. Also what kind of shape are the crabs in? Thank's much for the info.

Re: Newport crabbing??
Hey bendman!!! I can only say I have never had any luck at all crabbing in Newport. I have people tell that they have caught tons but I have never caught more than half a dozen one time in about three years. I have given it up. So if someone can tell you the secret place or bait or whatever let me know as well 8>]
Good luck and good crabbing

Re: Newport crabbing??
Fisher, I don’t usually crab at Newport my self either but the few times that I have I have done well. I like the crabbing down in Waldport better. I don’t know why but sometimes when it is bad at Waldport, it’s good in Newport. I’m not sure where you have been doing your crabbing there but I seem to do best by the international dock area. I think that’s what they call it. Anyways if you launch on the south side of the bay head up river probably ¼ to ½ mile. You will see a big huge propane tank just past the international docks. I crab all around in there (when I’m there) As far as what to use for bait, use anything that you usually do. I like chicken, shad, tuna scraps etc. Hope this helps.

Re: Newport crabbing??
Crabbed Newport Saturday. Lots of competition, crabbing v-e-r-y slow. Lots of crabs, little males, little females, big females, enormous females, just very very few legal males and zero larger reds.
Did haul up a 17" starfish and two sunflower stars. Saw a pink-footed shearwater. But, these make thin soup.
As for bait, when we got there my buddy said, "I have a pulled abdominal muscle. I can't haul rings or traps, you'll have to pull them all." .
I'll let you use him for bait!

Re: Newport crabbing??
Old Coot, sounds just like when I was down there last week. Had several females that were off the crab scale.......VERY excited pulling up the trap seeing those, only to find out they were she-crabs, bummer

Pretty funny Old Coot!
Newport can be excellent at times and be extremely slow at times like anywhere else also.
