Default Newport Bar crossing for Thursday the 3rd?

I plan on crossing the bar and doing a little salmon fishing on Thursday conditions permitting. It looks as if we have a minus tide and she will be ebbing until 9:30 in the morning or so. Would showing up at daylight and crossing an ebbing bar with that much water exchange be doable or should I sleep in a couple more hours and hit the bar after 9:00. The last time I crossed the Newport bar she was ebbing but had a very little water exchange.

Anyone have recent salmon report for that area. I only plan on running about 3 miles out and trolling North.

Thanks for the advice.....

My theory is it always makes sense not to cross on an ebb, especially if its only a short wait. The salmon bite is almost always better during slack tide anyway. That being said Newport is one of the better ones to cross when Tillamook or the Columbia is rough due to an ebb. IMHO

THU...N WIND 20 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 3 FT
INDEPENDENCE DAY...N WIND 20 KT... WIND WAVES 3 FT... NW SWELL 4 FT.

Looks pretty good to me specially for salmon.

Here is your tide chart.

Tides for Bar at entrance starting with July 3, 2003.
Day High Tide Height Sunrise Moon Time % Moon
/Low Time Feet Sunset Visible

Th 3 High 2:30 AM 7.8 5:36 AM Rise 9:29 AM 10
3 Low 9:46 AM -1.0 9:05 PM
3 High 4:35 PM 6.5
3 Low 9:47 PM 3.3

As you said it will be ebbing. What your wanting to look at is the amount of exchange.

7.8 to -1.0 is a spring tide, meaning a large exchange.

The biggest part of the exchange is observed the last two hours of the ebb.

Notice the high is 0230. The flow won't be noticable until 0300. I would be comfortable crossing anytime from daylight till 0700 in my sled. the closer to daylight you depart the better the conditions will be.

Go gettem!

I concur with fishplay. Departing at daylight SHOULD mean a safe bar crossing, given the NOAA report.
By the way Fishplay--been trying to reach ya for 2 weeks! Just found a new number for ya in another thread, so I left a message. Give
me a holler.

Fishplay,
I want to thank you for the report and your advise on crossing the bar. I might be going that way on the 3rd. to see if I can get some salmon in the 20 sled.

Fishplay is right on. An early morning departure should be fine, but if not then you just have to wait. Newport bar is much more friendly than Tilly/CR. Based on the ocean forecast though (3/3) it shouldn't be too ugly out there. If the forecast jumps to (3+/7+) then I might consider sleeping in.

Besides, the fish don't like that slop either!

Thanks for the info fellows! Looks like a North wind will be blowing. Does that make for rougher water with a west swell?

I hope to see some of you guys in the salt....
