What I see in the new paper is that escapement goals have not been met on those that have them for most of the past 10 years. How do you increase take under that scenario?

Not much has been decided in favor of sports angling since ODF&W moved to Salem.Just the way the legislature wanted it.Something Stinks in Salem and I believe the stench comes from the governors office. His way of making peace with the ag community and eastern Oregon. At our expense.

Default ODFW Resubmits increased wild steelhead take

Letter to NOAA fisheries 2/12/04

“The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife are resubmitting the document titled “Biological Assessment of Incidental Impacts on Winter Steelhead Listed Under the Endangered Species Act in Non-Indian Mainstem Columbia River Fisheries.” This document includes additional information and clarification and also attempts to answer the concerns and issues raised in your January 22, 2004 letter to us.”

Steven D. King
Salmon Fishery Manager
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife

Both new documents may be found at the following links:

http://home.comcast.net/~lway3/Coverletter_04_feb_1.doc

http://home.comcast.net/~lway3/Final...lhead_BA_1.doc

They went from 7% impact to 6% and dropped other requests, but they continue to move forward…
With out ever releasing a public statement.

What should we in Oregon do about this?

Is this right?

It is hard to send in letters when ODFW has not released a statement admitting to this request to raise wild steelhead take by commercial netters. That is probably why they have not officially released a statement.

Cosmo
Escapement goals and de-listing criteria have taken second place to the commercial fishery. That is just plain wrong.

ssteelheadsteve
Nothing has been decided in favor of sports angling since ODFW got its budget passed. They act so considerate when they need our help maintaining funding or when asking for help in raising license fees but once the biennium is set it is business as usual toward the commercial interests.

Would it help bomb-barding the Governor’s office with letters showing sports fishermen are appalled at Steve King’s management philosophy ?

Or maybe I shouldn’t give Steve all the credit for the wrong doing but I did address him at an Ocean Salmon Industry Meeting some years back as to why the gill nets were allowed to fish the Columbia when some of the early component of the wild coho stocks were returning.
I wasn’t impressed with his answer and it appeared to me that was pro commercial in a situation that didn’t have any room for commercial gill netting.

I have spent many hours with Steve King. He is told how it will be from the Governor's Office. It is then up to him to make the Governors' wishes come true. I am shocked that this thread has fallen so low in the que considering the wide ranging impacts this decision will have if approved. This will truly be a huge negative for STEP and all Winter Steelhead Anglers from Hood River to Astoria.

Just wondering, what is the kill of native steelhead by sportfishermen on the columbia? Is it anywhere close to the netters?

From the 02/13/04 BA

"Sport fishery impacts to wild winter steelhead are very low, less that 0.1%, and are based on the 10% catch and release mortality rate recommended by the TAC for all mainstem Columbia River sport fisheries"

<font size="2" face="verdana,arial,helvetica">This surprises me Steve!
I would have thought it would have worked the other way around that ODFW bio's were informing the Gov of the options and improvements, not the Gov. was telling the biologist mgmt. experts on how to manage these fish?

This is shocking to me!
You mean that Steve has been taking orders from Nixon all this time?
