Wiring Help
I am going to use my 86 Nissan 4x4 to pull a 1500 pound pop up trailer, I am under powered, 4cy, but I did pull a 2500 pound pond tune party boat with it.
Today I went to check the plug into my trailer connection, could not find my probe, to check, so off I went to Nappa to get a reducer to 4 prong, I had a 7.
I took off the old receiver, changed to a 4, alls well, but I plugged the trailer into the same 4, and I had to clean up some jerry gig wiring, and I have Stop lights, running lights, but the turn signal come on both sides at the same time, it was getting late, dark, and tomorrow is another day.
I pulled the trailer light housing off, and I see some more jerry rig, not bad but some.
I am hooping after the clean up alls well.
I don't care if the side lights work, just running, brake, and turn.
Any help would be a blessing.
Thanks Norski.

Re: Wiring Help
It is your ground. Guarantee it is the ground. If it isn't I'm sorry I thought it was, but really, It's your ground.

Re: Wiring Help
STG, if it's the ground, should I pull the white wire that they say is the ground, and ground it to the frame or so in the truck???, and if I do this, how well the trailer be grounded???
Or use the white wire that they say is the ground, and ground it to the truck, and run the white wire through the plug to the trailer.
Thanks STG.

Re: Wiring Help
The ground wire from the truck should go to the plug and the ground wire on the trailer should go to the corresponding pin on the plug (connector).

Re: Wiring Help
You need a solid state adapter to run a 4 wire set up. Them forign cars use a different bulb for the stop lites, hence the adapter.

Re: Wiring Help
or a new set of turn signal lights, with a good ground. the old 4 wire rigs did not have adapters available last time i looked. look at your truck like this. red wire go's to brake lights, brown wire go's to running lights, green wire go's to turn signal, yellow go's to turn signal, white goes to ground, then trailer brakes, 12 volt, backup lights. if you have a 4 wire trailer, with 6 wire truck you need to add the turn lights to trailer or find adapter. adapter is a little brain box that turns your 6 wire input into a 4 wire output.

Re: Wiring Help
The truck has the 4 wires system, like Baltz said, when I pulled the wires yesterday, all I had were 4 wires, the only wire that matched up to the 4 plug in was the white--ground, used a tester, to wire up the turn, stop, running, and after testing again, from the truck all works, plugged into trailer, and like I said be for, I have the running lights, stop, but the turn lights, work like flashers.
If it's the ground, like STG said, than I well make a pig tail-- ground strap from the truck bumper, frame' back to the plug in for the trailer.
Hay it's Saturday, could be fishing, scouting, but I need to get this done be for next Friday.
Thanks guys for your input.

Re: Wiring Help
I have come to the conclusion, that someone has re-wired this trailer, the trailer is a Apache pop up, medal sides, fold up and down.
I went under the truck, I do have a small black box that the wires go into, and come back out.
Here is what I have.
Yellow is left turn
Green is right turn
Brown is running & brakes
White is ground
Now for the trailer.
Orange
Red
Yellow
Blue
I think someone has re-wired this trailer, as I can't find a ground scours.
All I did today was clean up the jerry rig, made sure that all connection were clean and tight.
I called a shop over here in Bend, the guy says to get your jumper cables out, hook the ground to the - on battery, and to the frame, than just touch each wire to the + cable, the one with the most spark well be your ground??
I stop at Nappa, the older gentleman said back in the 70's, the blue wire should be your brakes, if that is true, than blue to brown, but I really don't want to be replacing fuses, also he said that the trailer should be grounded through the tong to truck???
This may sound crazy, but if you don't ask, well you well never know.
Thanks for all the help, and at this time I need all I can get.
Norski.

Re: Wiring Help
I thought most RV's were 7 wire, including pop-ups. Does it have backup lights? 12v. system to trailer? ect.?

Re: Wiring Help
Hook up a jumper wire from truck to trailer frame to give you a ground to work with
Then hook up a jumper from positive on truck batt (a long wire to back of truck)
Touch the wire from the truck battery to each wire on trailer just for a moment while someone watches the trailer lights
you should get one left turn one right turn and both lights for tail the one you touch and just get a big spark is ground
that is if the trailer is wired right

Re: Wiring Help
I went back to get the light working, I used the - & + on the battery, well it's, or the wiring is so screwed up, that, my son & I went in on a system that you can put on any trailer, just like what tow trucks have.
I feel like the weekend was wasted, working on lights, now, don't need a $150.00 ticket for not having them, would make the deer trip, well worthless, other than the memories with my son.
Thanks all who put there into the pot, I try-ed all that you had to offer, but in the end, I GAVE UP. Spent $30.00 it's a done deal now.
Thank you all.
Norski.
