Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
Well Mel and gang, you did'nt miss anything. We left the dock at 7:15am to take a peek. I'd love to tell you a story of bountiful catches and full fish boxes but the river was extremely choppy and the ocean was a bit more angry than I wanted to take on. Thus, I called the trip and we went safely back to dock and sat around for about 30 minutes or so and made our last call to the CG's for a report. This was about 9am. 10 ft breakers on the spit 4 to 6 on the middle ground with occasional 8 and 3 to 4 wind chop. The ocean was just a bit worse than the bar. Final call and we all are safe and alive to fish a more tame ocean another day.
Got a call from a friend that was out in that slop on Coho Sally. Said all but the captain got sick and that it was all anyone could do to stand up out there. That said, they did get into a TON of fish out there including nooks and very nice coho for this early. Fish were biting short though. I'll be trying again this coming weekend to get out there and pound the fish.
Those of you that missed out or decided to stay home it was a good call.

Thanks for the report. I made a 4:30 in the morning decision to cancel the trip. I am glad I did.

:depressed: :depressed: At least I know you didn't catch them all! Where are you launching out of over the 4th?
I sure hope it lays down this week. I'd rather have flat Ocean and no fish than be dancin the sailors jig out there!

Salty Pups take notice. C & E is an experienced "Dog" and the reason why is because he makes calls like that. There will always be other days to fish......as long as your still alive.
Sorry you didn't make it out C/E but glad your safe! The fish gods will shine on you in the future!

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
Mel, boat is moored in Ilwaco on g-54. Will be there all summer.
Rod, no fish is ever that important. I rather be a "Live Chicken" than a dead fisherman.
Folks, you would not believe what we were witnessing out there on the river. We saw open sleds heading out over the bar. I know the coasties were hanging at the CR bouy from the reports I got. Wonder how many calls were made yesterday.
BTW did anyone witness or help the guy that rolled his boat at the bridge Saturday. I heard from a local that a dude was fishing by himself up there and somehow managed to flip his boat over. Anyone see this? Seems other fishers came to the rescue and the CG retrieved the boat. Would like to know more if i-fishers saw this.

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
I told you that bridge is dangerous, stay away, esp. when the Chinook are in the river.
That stretch of water just above/below the bridge is one of the roughest sections in the river. I've taken water over the flybridge on Miss B doing 6-7knots through there.
We saw a guy walk his anchor rope around the boat to the stern and cleat it off to pull it. It was weekend before last down there. Maybe this is the same guy?

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
Yeah, we went out and took a short ride with an experienced skipper. We turned around between buoy 12 and 10 somewhere and headed back. Kind of dissapointing as I was really looking forward to getting out in the ocean and after some fish. It hurt even worse when we got back to Hammond and heard on the radio that guy's were getting into fish out there. But It's nice to be safe and glad I didn't have to get sick.
We were on a 30 foot Tolly. I could not believe all of the little boats that were out around 12 getting tossed around by 8-10 swells with chop on top of it. We saw 4 guys in a 19 foot super vee out there. The only guy wearing a life jacket was the the guy holding the tiller handle. I got back to Salem in time for the noon news and I thought for sure I'd see some live coverage of another "accident" at sea.
I'm glad everyone was okay. And if you own a little boat....when you see 30 and 35 footers turning around and heading in....you probably should follow suit.

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
C & E,
Myself, my neighbor & Crazy Fish were up at 4:30 AM and I visited the NOAH site and clicked on the buoy for the Columbia River.
Saw that the small craft advisory had not been lifted and made my call. No trip. Even before i left Hillsboro.
I have learned over the years that this is an unforgiving place when you don't heed the call of Mother Nature.
The Ky. Hog Hunter and company will live to fish a calmer day. Were we disappointed? You bet I was. I was looking forward to spending my first trip with Crazy Fish but its all good and there are many days left in the summer.
Play hard, be safe.
KHH

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
KHH you did the right thing dude. I was already there on saturday putting the boat in moorage in Ilwaco. Thus, It did not hurt to run out and take a look see and talk with the coasties for a few minutes. When the wires started to wistle at the dock I knew it was over.
Those of you that called it a day.... Those of you that did not....glad you made it back.

Re: Opener out of Ilwaco. WOW!!!!!
I had seen that same report early in the morning. I had my doubts about us making it out but I still felt it was worth a drive.
I had been out when it was forecasted "small craft advisory" and when we got there it was like a big pond, smooth as silk, Flat as a pancake. We even got into fish.
C&E made a good call. There will always be another day to fish when you don't take chances you need too.
