Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Anyone been to Adak?
I am moving to a new clinic over the weekend in Adak. Another time zone away.
This where part of WWII occurred on American soil. From what I hear there is a population of 150 in a town built for 10,000.
Should be interesting.
I want to thank all you guys for keeping me mentally healthy. It is great when you are away like this to read your post. I have always learned a lot and enjoy the humor you guys share on here. Thanks a lot.

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Been there a few times for a refueling stop on the way to Attu, truly the end of the world, Adak is only half way there. Used to be the third largest city in AK when it was an active Naval Base. They even had a Mc Donalds and other things from home for the military personnel and their families. There is a National Forest and a pretty good caribou herd. The island is run by one of the Native Corporations now. Enjoy the Aleutian Winter!

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
From what the others have said I hope you have a good book for the winter and the fishing is GREAT when the weather allows. Oh btw, look out for the polar bear over your right shoulder.
Um never mind, I just looked up your new home and the crabbing should be better than the fishing.
Either way be safe.

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Good luck! I was stationed there in the navy in 67 for a year, and your in for a surprise....Adak means birthplace of the winds in aleut language, and thats no joke!!!!!When i was there there was no mcdonalds, and ther were underground tunnels to go anywhere, cuz of the wind! Most miserable place i have ever been to.Fished and hiked all over, and all i saw was artic fox, must have imported the caribou....Was in a bus when it got blown over while i was going to work. THE WIND I owned one of the 7 old cars on the island and drove the 2 miles of road constantly.......

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
I have relatives that just got back from caribou hunting Adak. They said it was "interesting", but I don't think it is on their list of things to do again. On a bright note, the caribou are supposed to be about the biggest ones in the world due to few predators on the island.

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Adak is....Interesting. I was there for just a few hours on a refueling stop last year. Incredible history. A sign in the Alaska airline terminal (one a week flight) said that at one point in WW II, there were 90,000 troops on Adak.
Our jet:
Not much out there:
Nearby abandoned buildings:

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Adak is up to two flights a week, Thurday and Sunday.
This looks about the same as where I have been in the Aleutians.
It is pretty impressive the amount of our tax dollars that get wasted up here.
There is a community north of where I am at now that had a new school, tsunami survival shelter, and homes built with your tax dollars that was abandoned this year. Make you shake your head.
I have heard the birth place of the wind for Cold Bay and King Cove. I will be impressed if the wind is more impressive in Adak. That will be something.
I have 20 days to do there then should be on my way home to see Jr. run in the XC District meet.
Thanks for all the updates and expereinces with Adak.

OK. Adak has been officially scratched from my "places to go" list.

My Dad was stationed there about the same time. He was a fire crew chief. I was in the Navy myself and was able to pull into port there in the 80's It was cool seeing where my Dad spent his time. He was blow away that they actually had a McDonald's & a Pizza Hut!

Re: Going to beautiful downtown Adak, AK....
Try doing a year! The only thing to do there was drink and fight. During the day i was an electrician, and when you went to climb a pole the first step was to put the wind at your back!!!!!!
