Default Tun~A~Lert, 1st tuna Rodeo, 2003

There are several threads now with this topic ... 'Let's go catch TUNA!' So I am gathering them all here.

Hi guys ... lets make some plans to catch tuna this week. Team Pilar is staying in Newport Wed, Thurs night and maybe Friday too if a reservation cancels at our motel. The boat is already there. The forecast still includes NW wind so we will have to watch that but it appears that the seas will be down to 2 and 4 by mid week with a 15 kt NW wind. Maybe it will be a morning show with the wind in the afternoon.

Jen is looking into getting Wednesday off ... so we may drive down early on Wednesday morning and fish Wednesday. Definetly in for Thursday and maybe Friday too.

The flagship 'Julie Rose III' will be running out of Newport and Popeye can fill you in on his plans.

Depoe Bay would work best for a launch point for team 'Pilar' because it is nearest my favorite Sea Mount aka '61 degrees'. Those that have done this before know all about never making it all the way out to TUNA! town (N45 W125). We always load up about 10 miles short of that point at '61 degrees'. Also there is the awesome and deserted cleaning station there and the harbor master Gary.

So ... does anyone want to run on Wednesday? Thursday? Friday? We are looking for a few good boats to join in the hunt. Head west, find the edge of the warm water and stack fish on deck. The fish are there guys .. don't make me prove it to you.

Find em and grind em.

Pilar Wednesday ... tentative, Thursday .. Yes, Friday, Yes.

Pilar- tides are bad for early morning bar crossing for us until Saturday. Not sure it makes much diff in Depoe so good choice of ports, no water to run out right (to speak of)?

I think it's 3 am high at the CR on Thursday norning. So I'm takin some newbies out for Salmon late (10 or so after it slacks).

By Sat it 5 am, that's the day for us to chase the ones out in the Blue. It's going to be an early morning after the 4th!

Keta- I'll just tie you to the wheel for the day and give ya a bucket. Who needs an autopilot?

Mark Mc, now that is news I can use. The north blow should sharpen up the line between cold and warm. Look for this fisher to be cruisin that break for the big Albacore and incidental billfish, Bigeye or Bluefin. I've got a real fishy feeling about the early offshore big game fishing.

Look for reports with photos by the weekend. We hope to make the reported Bluefin sightings turn into bluefin landings.

Jen and I are having quite a time trying to cram all of the stuff we used to pack into her Tahoe, for a tuna trip into the new Subaru. Hard choices about what to leave and what to bring.

John I should have room in the back of my truck, at least for the drive down. I'll be sleeping there Wed. night so I'll need my space back.
But then again if you stay longer than I do, you may have a worse problem going home with all the fish.

Myles, thanks. Jen has it in her head to fish 3 days. I think we'll need a bigger rig to haul 3 days home. We might even try canning it there ... never done that before.

Lets see....3days X 36 tuna X 15lbs = 1620 lbs X .45 recovery rate = 729 lbs of tuna added to the gear and equipment you brought down....quite a load! Good luck Jon. If needed, I can route through the northland and help you out going back. Hopefully you have a solution that works better by Tuesday...let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Otherwise I will see you bright and cheerful on Wednesday or Thursday morning!

Someone that is in need of gear please let me help. I will donate all of my fish except maybe one loin for the Q the next day. I am cleared for thursday only. Call me 3607988560 or email...

Hello all my boat is CHOO CHOO a 20 ft seaswirl this is my first time posting on ifish so bear with me. I frequent Depoe Bay was out for Tuna twice last year and now I am hooked. I have lived in Sherwood for most of my life minus college years. I have gone out on almost al the charters from depoe up to west port washington. I have owned choo choo for 3 years and have allready made 6 trips out for salmon and bottom fish this year.

Fishing is a religion for me and I practice as much as possible.

Let me tell you a story When I was about 12 years old my father took the family to Hawaii. We toured the sugar cane fields and the pineapple fields and the rain forests and even took a helicopter ride of all the Islands which was great. Then the real fun came when we went Marlin fishing. The captain asked if we wanted to be tired or relaxed and we decided to be tired so he took us to a large buoy and said if you see a pole bend real it in. 30 yellow fins later we looked at the captain and both agreed we were tired. Memories like this are what make a person whole. Thank you father.

Okay,

Bombing down to South Beach Thursday afternoon...I could be talked into a Friday run, but the question is -- what the heck am I going to do with 20 tuna when I'm staying until Monday? Hmm...just how big of a freezer does Popeye have? Just kidding Popeye! If the conditions look perfect, I'm in, otherwise I'll be patient.

I have a confession myself -- I was so disgusted with the ocean this weekend that I went water skiing today at Green Peter Reservoir. Pilar and Corrirod, I'm still a dog, right? Please don't tell me that brief excursion to freshwater has voided my membership! By the way the conditions on Green Peter today -- no chop, no swell, and some awesome, uh, bikinis!

Hey you guys, don't laugh at Seasquid. He's a brave man. I've rarely been as nervous as when I've been up one of Green Peter's arms surrounded by about 150 Ski-Nautique thunder boats piloted by beer-drinking, grass-smoking, testosterone-crazed idiots watching those bikini's instead of where they were going.

Give me the ocean any day!

OK - So the wind has been blowing S/SW real stong all afternoon evening here in Hillsborito. Anyone want to guess what that's going to do with the TUNA water.
I sure hope it's the same direction offshore!

To the south of us (central to northern CA) the tuna fishing has gone from fair (for the last week or so) to excellent in the past day. Lots of 10 to 15 fish/boat scores, a charter with over 100, and a private boat out of Ft Bragg with 20+, 20+, and 50+ fish for last 3 days straight. Reports of a few bluefin caught in the mix too, and supposedly a yellowfin & a yellowtail caught. Looks real likely that once it lays down up here, the tuna will be on the chomp. So get ready; ANY DAY NOW!!!

Choo Choo, join us in Depoe this week and run with the dogs for tuna. Welcome to Ifish and to the Salty Dogs forum. Ask away if you have any questions or want to join up with a group of boats on any given day.

One of the 12 steps for tuna addiction is accepting that not everyone loves tuna fishing. I am having trouble believing that one. Pretty much everyone I meet and discuss tuna with gets a faraway look in their eyes when they recall their fishon experiences.

Not everyone loves tuna fishing ... yet.

You guys are luni-tuna's. I have only done tuna one time on a charter out of Depoe Bay using hand lines. Had a blast and would love to do it again. Like Mel I am moored in the lower columbia system right now and my trailer is a bit sick right now with brake problems.

Just courious how heavy does your tuna gear have to be? Will an ugly stick sturgeon rod 6.5 ft and a Penn 321 real with 80lb tough line do the trick?

If someone has some saturdays in July open and needs a crewman let me know. Would love to go and help with the carnage.

C&E - that gear will do fine. I use 50lb tuff on a Daiawa 50H Sealine mounted to any broomstick I can find. Keep the drag reasonably loose and oild your clicker good cause when they hit it's awsome (a trainwreck is the term that is commonly used here). I should be able to squeeze ya in one of these Sat's (if the dang Ocean ever calms down).
You stay down at Ilwaco on the fishing weekends?

Thanks for the invitation and nice welcome aboard pilar.

If I read the SST right it looks like 60 degrees only 18 miles out of Depoe... :depressed:

I'm sure there may be a few halibut hills, but I think everybody's favorite is actually just a few miles north of the ranch (33 to 36 miles out?).

I thought that halibut hill was a few miles about 250 deg. magnetic from the chicken ranch. But there are several other bumps / pinnacles / edges north & northeast of the ranch we see people fish at.

And going back a few years these are beyond bump. It was uncommon until 2003 to catch fish in July. We are so spoiled.

2005, the wind machine stayed on for almost all of July.

Interesting that you should bump this thread. Havent thought about that boat in awhile. Now running a 2352 hard top.
That boat had a 40 gallon tank and I used to run it out about 35 miles and still come back with 1/4 left for safety.
Now its a 100 gallon tank and 50 miles and 1/3 for safety.

Reminds me of a little 16ft boat coming back to dock with about 6 inches of freeboard left due to 30+ tuna (can you say plugged). The captain throwing a tuna on the dock asking the checker if it needed to be fin clipped.

I asked John if I could keep that fish and he said "Sure I got plenty".
I can honestly say I caught my first tuna at the depoe bay dock they were in so close LOL. I even took a picture of me and John's tuna.

This was fun, hope they push in soon its been a hard year waiting.
