Default New boat and new job acquired!

Well, I found a summer job!

I would like to introduce my new friend and business partner for the summer, The Pursuer:

She's a 21' Learned Dory, fiberglass over wood boat with a Volvo Penta 145B I/O and all the gear for salmon, tuna, and Hali's.

I got to take her for a spin this morning off of Gerhardt beach and she is a fishing animal!

She has a Salmon Troll Permit so I'll be hitting the Second Season opener on Thursday off of Gerhardt beach.

Anyway, I would imagine that I'll be selling the Trophy since I can't use two boats at once.

The real story is my wife told me I wouldn't be able to afford to tuna fish this year..... so I showed her!

Of course then came "You did what?!!!"

.........once the doctors sewed my head back on and patched up the large lacerations that were inflicted upon me, my wife began to calm down considerably and I think we'll be talking again by year end.

Congratulations Rod!

Did you get a beach rig for launching in the deal too, or are you going to be going out of the regular ports?

Good fishing.

I take it that is Deeplines old boat. Looks good. A job a guy can love! Is deepline going to fish with you?

I'd love to fish it with you myself. You have to name your deckhands on the permit though right.?

Was hoping to chase the bullets with ya out of dopey this year. Where you plan to fish from?

Congrats.....hope it works out well!

Wow! I thought you were kidding!
I got an alert to delete a boat ad, he said he'd bought... Yeah right!

Well, you did!

Congrats! Everyone take time to say thanks to Corrirod for the moderating he helped with. He's notified me he'll be much too busy whacking salmonids, Tunas, and... butts!

OK, have fun, Corrirod, and I wish you all the luck!

Thanks Jen and sorry for the short notice.

Fishplay, this was Deepline's boat and he really, really, really, really, didn't want to sell it but he's making some changes in his life and going on some new adventures so he's decided to take a reprieve from fishing for awhile, at least in Oregon.

There will definately be some spots for crew and passengers, both for sport and commercial. I intend to use it for both.

I've got about a million things I need to learn though before I'll feel comfortable taking people out. I've got a couple friends and relatives that are going to help me thru the learning curve though so I hope it won't be long.

Holy Mackerel! To quote your wife, "You did what?"

Sheesh, doctor, really. I only let him out of my sight for a minute....

Seriously, good luck and I hope you don't get too busy to chat with the Dogs once in a while. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

Oh...and thanks for picking up the slack in the moderator's corner.

Good Luck!

"It was a tall young oysterman lived by the river-side,
His shop was just upon the bank, his boat was on the tide;
The daughter of a fisherman, that was so straight and slim,
Lived over on the other bank, right opposite to him. "

Rod,

Wow!!!! Congrats on the leap of faith. It is always refreshing to see someone do something bold.

If you are looking for deck hands, my little one has extensive "dory time"...

I can't get enough of those Pacific City dories. It just seems how commercial fishing should be.

Thanks for all the kind words.

It was a huge "blind" leap but I realized there would probably be no better time in my life to try it and I didn't want to look back later with regrets. I decided to dive in head first so I wouldn't have time to talk myself out of it. Too many times in my life I've wanted to do something new and only focused on the negatives until I finally talked myself out of it. One of those things was to join the Coast Guard, and now I'm too old and I regret not doing it. :depressed:

Anyway, in this case, whether I succeed or fail, at least I can say I tried it!

Rod,

Where do you plan to fish out of, Gearhart or Pacific City or ....? I'm like the rest of the flatlanders, all I know about dory fishing stems from watching them launch and land at PC while I sat on shore and drank a cool one. I know they are GREAT looking boats out on the water though. That one Edsr built is beautiful, and I kinda like the paint scheme on yours, too.

I've got to check it out and at least do the walk-around thing so you show me what you've got. It looks ready to go.

Remember, we've all turned down opportunities/adventures sometime in our lives, and I'll bet there isn't an Ifisher out there who isn't pulling for you.

Go gettem!

ROd- If your planning on launching off the beach, do your truck a favor and buy and old piece of junk 4 wheel drive. Maybe you can just leave it parked down there somewhere safe (locked up?) with the boat on and everything. That salt will eat your truck up in nothing flat. I guess the newer vehicles are treated and won't be quite as bad, but I'd be pretty leary.

Looks like you need to spend some quality time with Mark (Fish Assassin) over some cold ones. I know he'd love to give you some tips and secrets about Dorys and PC fishing if that's the plan.

I commercialed salmon for 5 years, including one year in a dory. I loved every minute. A tough way to make a living, especially with the restrictions today. Good luck Rod, I envy you in this adventure. I have given serious thought to commercial tuna fishing after I retire. I want to get an old troller to convert to pleasure anyway, why not make it help pay for itself? Fishing is a poor way to get rich but a rich way to live...isn't that right Mark and Mark? Good luck to ya and high lines.

Rod,

Congrats on the new ride. A Learned boat is a thing of Joy!! Victor built
mine during the winter of 1989 and I fished her for the first season in 1990.
She's still a fine craft. You'll get many years of great service out'a yours.

Keep me in mind if you've got any questions/problems with the dory. I just *might*
be able to help.

Right now I'm too dumb to even know what questions to ask but as soon as I get some time in the boat I'm sure I'll have a ton for you.

It's being delivered to the house in a couple hours. I'm almost as excited about the arrival of the boat as I was for my last child!

Rod,

I've seen two replies here telling you to get a "classic beach rig" for a boat
puller. Let me relate some of my experience in this area ...

I used to drive 10-15-20 year old 4x4 trucks to launch the dory with. Seems like
I was forever working on the trucks to keep them running so I could go fishing. Lots
of missed fishing days/opportunities/bucks. After a few years of this (like 10)
I bought a newer truck that didn't needto be worked on. I got to fish more
days. I caught more fish. I made more money. More than enough to offset the cost of
the truck. Every three years I would trade that truck in (before the rust started showing
   ) and get another one. I finally upgraded to a NEW truck. First
thing I did with it was drive it down on the beach and into the surf! Just to show it
what it's life was going to be all about!!

A couple of things to make your tow rig last longer when launching in the surf:
1) Rinse the underside WELL after every use. Don't neglect the wheels and brakes.
2) only back your boat out into the surf as far as you HAVE to. You will usually not
need to go out any deeper than your hubs to make the boat float.
3) Once a week take it to a car wash that has one of the under-carriage spray down
washers. This will get more sand and salt out than you rinses with the hose.
4) RINSE! RINSE! RINSE! RINSE! RINSE! RINSE! AFTER EVERY USE!!
5) spray the under-carriage with old hydrolic oil or with old ATF oil. The sand will
stick, but it keeps things well lubricated.

Oh, yeh, and don't forget to RINSE!

SlowRoll,

Please don't tempt him like that! If he doesn't have the correct permits
(a limited sellers permit) he could get busted for that BIG time. Like everything
else that has to do with commercial fishing, the ticket for selling one of your fish
to somebody other than a licensed fish buyer is right around five grand!! I'm sure
you don't want to do *that* to him!!

No worries Slow Roll, I'll be picking up the permit tomorrow and hopefully ready to sell fish within a week or so.

I've also got 2 crewmembers licenses so I'm legal to have some help aboard also.

Thanks for all the offers everyone and I'll take you up on them as soon as I get up to speed a little better.

Don't count me out on the upcoming tuna hunts! I'd love to be apart of the pack!

I say you can't beat an old beater with a strong engine, new breaks and a rebuilt tranny.

Good luck with your new job. Dorries are cool.

Nice Rig,

Please do not hesitate to call any time night or day, well almost any night. I am usually down Friday night and leave Sunday late. WEEKEND WARRIOR YOU KNOW. Fishing Sat. and Sun.
The reason I am posting is I can be on the Beach at Gearhart in 5 minutes in an emergency with my pickup. I also ran a Com. dory out of Depot Bay in the 70's. I'm a little jealous can you tell.

Tom- I didn't know that! So how come you can't catch fish now?

Oh- maybe that's why you "used" to run a dory?

Mel, I guess it depends on your meaning of the word "Fish" "IS".
I admit it, I'd rather sit my fat $%& on the sofa and watch T.V than waste a couple hard earned dollars on bait and fuel chasing those
things with wiskers.
I think everyone would be happy to know I did not make a dent in the sturgeon poulation, more for everyone else you know.
We'll see who gets back to the dock 1st Thursday.

Congrats on the dory and the change in life. We all need one of those at least once, otherwise who else is going to drive our wife over the edge?
Let us know when your first haul comes in, if we can, I would buy a couple of em from ya right on the beach.

Hey Rod - I would love to look at the insides of your new boat to see if I can figure out how to make some storage space, containers, etc. I am looking for any information about layout designs that are efficient and working boats are generally lean and very efficient.

BTW, are you going to be trailering your boat home, mooring, what?

Also, have learned a little about building and repairing if you need help.

Ed, I'll email some pics of the inside as soon as I can. It has a really nice wide gunnel for cleaning fish, which also creates a lot of space below for different storage spaces.

Victor Learned, who build my boat during the Winter of 1989, Passed
away a couple of winters ago. A great loss to the dory community. Victor
was a real gentleman!

Victors' Son, Terry, built boats with the "old man" and learned the trade.
Terrys' daughter helped while grandpa was alive so she had opportunity to learn
a lot, also. Sounds like now Terry and his daughter are the boat builders
in the family. A true family tradition!

Quality boats!! Built to last! Mine is still as strong as the day she
was built and I suspect it will be for many years to come.

Rod - There was a good article about the Learned Dories in a recent issue of Woodenboat. The learned clan has been building dories for many years and there are many of them still sailing after years of service. I talked to him about a year ago and I'm sure if you need any advice he would be happy to help. Also, check out "The Dory Page" http://home.att.net/~td2evers . It is a good site for all of the TAs and SDs. If you can't find the article let me know.

Way to go Rod!!

When I was laid off, it was tougher than I thought to get the condfidence up to try a new career. Your decision is very impressive!

May you have good seas and seasons!
