Default Question about how to?

I am planning a trip up your way in the near future. I have never caught a Pacific Halibut, but lots of the California's. Much smaller and MUCH shallower. Anyone have any words of advice on techniques and/or locations? I read locations posted here like the Ranch, etc. Does anyone have the numbers for these location or are they posted on another page or website? Anything would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Tuna Chaser, your next opportunity will be in the August all depth season. Two weeks in a row for a few days each. The dates are on here somewhere.

There are a number of places to fish. The herd goes to a spot about 35 miles from Newport to the WSW, called the Chicken Ranch.

N44 30.789' W124 42.636'

The first spot is about 600 feet deep. Do a search on this forum for gear, preffered rods and reels, best/where to get bait, circle hook vs. J hook techniques and on and on and on.

And closer in you can go to my personal favorite fishing grounds the Rockpile or more correctly, Stonewall Bank. Try

N44 32.078' W124 24.952'

This second spot is fished for bottom fish, salmon and halibut. Hard to guess what you will catch on any given day. Drift mooching is the technique but some use trolled downriggers with great success.

Hey by the way it is all about the boat ride. This is the Mt Everest of boat rides. 80 miles round trip across some fickle water. August is pretty settled but I'll say it is for the experienced and extremely well prepared only.

Good luck and say hi to any dogs you see in pursuit of halibut.

Uglygreen,
I went back and read my post. You must have read something into it. I never said I was from California. I said I had caught lots of Californias (i.e. California Halibut). That's another type of Halibut UG. They're up in your neck of the woods too.

Thanks Pilar. That will do for a start. I think my boat can handle the 80 plus mile trip without too much trouble. I've made 150 to 200 mile round trip for the Albacore in Brookings and Crescent City and farther south. But it always pays to be safe. Thanks again.

UG,
Can't answer that one except to say the wife doesn't know where we live anymore. She signed me up on this site while she was visiting our son who does live in Crescent City. Have to get here to fix that.

There you go UG. He woke me up to fix it. Just for the record, he used to live in California so don't let him off the hook that easy.

Well, for those of you who didn't notice, his original trailer line said Crescent City. For what it's worth, my feeling is that the coastal communities in Humboldt & Del Norte counties, and the people who live there, are very much like the Oregon coastal communities (more in common than differences, other than to whom you pay your state taxes). Maybe I'm a little biased as I went to Humboldt State .

The only real "friction" I have ever seen is the silly bickering about Oregonians that come to fish the N. CA rivers, and the reciprocal stuff about Californians coming to fish the Chetco, Rogue, etc. Everyone wants their own private river; geez look at all the "zipperlip" stuff on the main chat board here.

So welcome aboard, TC. Looking forward to you keeping us posted on the Brookings happenings.
