Enlighten me oh salty ones!
I've recently decided, much to my wife's dismay, that I need another boat. The last three or four seasons I've been salmon fishing out of Depoe and Newport from our 20' north river sled. This is fine on nice days, but I made the terrible mistake of tuna fishing off a charter a year ago and haven't slept well since. I see a lot of trophy's out there, but all these guy's at the shows selling six figure boats say they're not worth owning. I'm looking at something in the 25'-27' range with the AK bulkhead. Any nuggets of info or things I should pay attention to while looking at used boats would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Be carefull with the Bayliner's. When I bought my boat, (not a Bayliner) I heard nothing but mixed reports about them, influencing me to get something else. Also, think real hard about an inboard vs outboard motor. I ended up with an outboard due to constant negative reports about the ups and downs of inboards.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Corrirod and I seem to be getting in and out of bays just fine. If you take them for what they are, you will have no problems. Now I might be off base for a boat the size you're looking for but for a 20' offshore boat you cannot get a better buy for the dollar. Just last week I discovered my hull was actually woven fiberglass cloth and not chopgun. I beat the h*** out of this boat and this was a good thing to find out. The two most important things I can think of for a boat of sufficient offshore size are hull strength and engine power/reliability. I feel like I have both.... Joe

Gr8 Pretender, you have no idea how big of can you just opened!
You might want to try the search feature with phrases like "offshore boat" to see what comes up first.
Otherwise, you'll be talked into buying a Seasportrophyorcatollystabiedwingmaxcatcdory, with a dual inboard diesel outboard, a flying "deck", manual electric downriggers, manual autopilot, tri-v-cata hull, with an open alaskan bulkhead!

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
I was thinking the same thing Salmonator!
Let's see, last summers totals, filled the salmon card, got 2 Hali's for 2 trips, 40-50 tuna, shark, tons of rockfish and a few lings...........hmmmmmmmmm.......maybe I did buy the wrong boat?

And Gr8 P,
When you finally decide on a boat and take that first trip to the chicken ranch or the rock pile, you're gonna see a LOT of Trophy's already out there. Lots of them.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Gr8....when I was looking..I picked a price range which automatically put me in an age range (old). I found alot of Bayliners out there from Portland to AnteCortas simply cause Bayliner produces and sells alot of boats. If you do what I did....you'll find what you DON'T want and go from there. Get a survey..including mechanical and good luck.

If you sell the most boats, then you have the biggest target on your back. And, I'am sure those salesmen have your best interest in mind!

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Skien and I can't brag about boats that we have never ridden in. I saw one once. My mouth is watering and my checkbook is emptying. Weld, Ed, WELD!!
Skien and I ordered Edwing custom 23' aluminum boats back in January. They shoule be ready to get wet in about 16 days, give or take, but who's counting.
How long can you wait? What are you looking to spend? Do you want it your way or their way?
I don't know anything about chopped or fiberglass cloth, all I know is that if I happen to bump yer Trophy I am real sorry and I hope the hole is not too big. I will be happy to help you weld...er...glue it up.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
I'm pretty sure that anything brand new or custom made is out of my price range. 25,000 or less is where I'd like to be. How come there aren't more stripers out there? They seem to be competitively priced with the trophys? Has there been any significant hull changes with the bayliners in the last ten years that I should be aware of? Thanks for all the info!

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Crabbait-Skein,
I too am saving my $ for an offshore boat. Those Edwings are sweet looking boats. Did I read on another thread from Skein that the 23 footer is around 32k? What kind of options and engine come with that price? I'm probably a couple years away from saving that kind of money for a boat, but that sounds like a good price for those boats. I was thinking those would run about 75k.
Congrats on your new boats....

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Gr8,
You might consider something smaller and newer/new. 25k can go a long way to putting you into a nice 20-22' boat. A large boat is nice, but a large boat, with a ton of hours, broken down is not. I bet if you took a poll here the average boat size would be around 20-22'. What you will find is people that spend their boat bucks on safety and redundancy. There is also much emphasis placed knowing you and your boats limits, thus picking your days. Another aspect is safety in numbers, you will see it repeated here over and over. Have fun, be safe, so you can have fun again.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Gr8...Our first Trophy was a 1992 20' with a 150hp that we bought in '99. We had it checked over by an outside source and NEVER had a major problem with it and we ran it hard. If you can find these, they are a great value.
We upgraded (I say that with mixed feelings!), last year to a 2001 Trophy 2359. It been a love/hate relationship. We have had our problems, but we seem to be working them out. While the layout and concept of the boat is great, there have been some workmanship issues and mechanical issues.
I've spoke with other 2359 owners that say it's been smooth sailing the whole way.
My advice for you is to look hard, read anything you can get your hands on (Trailer Boat magazine is great and they have a super website), and ask TONS of questions. If you go to a dealer, ask for references that have had their boat for at least a year that REALLY DO use their boat.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Liquid Asset, I'm sorry to hear you've had some troubles with the 2359. That is my dream boat. If and when I can build enough funds to get another family boat, that is the one I'm looking at. I hope they get all the issues worked out by the time I'm ready to buy.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
I owned a 2359 for a couple of years and basically had no problem with it. I feel there are some maintenance type issues with the Trophy's but bang for the buck they are a good deal. The hull has changed for the better from 1999 and they ride like a dream. I now have a Seasport which I really love, but I think the new trophy's are a better riding boat. But then again there are a lot of other issues to consider. If you are interested in one, give me a call (503) 623-6030 or lets meet and sip some cold ones and I will tell you my 2 years experience on them. I have a friend that has a 2000 and he also would be willing to exchange beer for info. One question you should ask owners about ANY boat is 'What is one thing you don't like about it'. Half the fun is in the lookin and dreamin. Then comes reality.
Good luck
Marty

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
gr8, We have a 20 ft. Alumaweld Intruder inboard v-6 with a 18 degree V, we love it. Lots of room for fishing with a fully inclosed top, with a heater. We fish year round now. The boat rides nice, lots of power with great gas milage. We take it out to the Rock pile and Ranch alot, and feel very safe. We looked at lots of boats before we dicided on this one. Very happy with our choice . Our other choice was a dory. There is a lot of nice boats out there. Have fun looking.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Which boat to get is the $64,000 question.
I'm always investigating all the options and have pretty much figured out what boat my next one will be.
Remember, it's all about catching fish so, my next boat is going to be a 19 foot tri-hull in bright blue.
You can't argue with science.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Gr8 Pretender,
I feel Stripers hold up better than the bayliners and hold ther value. Seaswirl has been makling boats for a long time. They are made in Oregon and sell them as fast as they can make them. I have a 2601 with the new ocean series Volvo and it is great! We made three trips to Halibut Hill on less than one tank of gas.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Thanks again for all the great info guys. It's all clear now! Like someone mentioned the shopping is the best part, well covering new boats with slime and blood is pretty gratifying too!

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
About five years ago I got caught in a storm 32 miles out of Coos Bay in my 21' Trophy. It moved in between us and shore. There were six other boats out there, most were more expensive than my old trophy. The boat did very well. The boats that had the most trouble had the front windshield soft tops. We took on very little water, save for the breaking 10-12 footers that landed on the hardtop.
Ever see green out your side window?
Kissed the dock , sold the boat and bought a bigger one. Now run a 2556 Bayliner. Most of today's boats will do fine out there. Lack of knowledge about the ocean will get you into more trouble than boat size.

Re: Enlighten me oh salty ones!
Check out the offerings from Harbercraft out of BC. http://www.harbercrafteagle.com/Mode....03.2425.shtml
Their Kingfisher model is one awesome machine. I have its distant cousin a 19' Nahanni - been a great boat so far & the 4 stroke Yamaha is easy on the gas. Full length reverse chines are nice in the ocean. Its a good one - I just want a bigger one.
