Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
Sorry- full up :depressed: but were taking apps for next year!
Just join in the discussions here and "poof", last week you couldn't even spell Slaty Odg. Now you are one!
We do have get togethers too, but mostly in the "off" season. The get togethers this time of year are at the beach and on the water!
Welcome aboard- tell us how you got so much salt in those veins. Inquireing fish brains gotta know!
edit: Corrirod had all the Salty DOg gear made up but I don't know if he has anything left. It was a custom order, might be a while before there's enough new demand to do it again?
You could always make an offer and see just how much they are worth to these dogs! I'd let one of my flags go for oh... couple boat bucks!

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
Big Tule, I think it is when we get serious enough to drill that first hole in the boat to mount downriggers and a marine band radio. Oh how that first hole hurts to cut......
Hey, if you cried when you got the first scratch wait till you drill that first hole.

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
snapshot- that doesn't even qualify you as a Salty Pup. Now drilling a 2" hole in the BOTTOM of your boat to mount a thru hull transducer, that's gets you Salty Dog points. Or is it Salty Submarine points?

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
Big Tule, GO BACK - GO BACK!!! It may not be too late for you, but for some of us - we're hopelessly intangled!
Think about this and see if you want it to happen to you:
I've spent well over $1,000 in Englund's in the last few months - and I've never even seen an albacore.
I've learned to tie handlines and stand-up rigs with feathers and broomtails - and I've never even seen an albacore.
I've ordered a $32,000 offshore boat (with three others in the driveway) - and I've never even seen an albacore.
I've driven hundreds of miles after work to commune with glazed-eyed TunaHolics - and I've never even seen an albacore.
And as I drove home from work tonight, all I could think about was "It's FINALLY July!"
Do you want this to happen to you?
I thought so. It's already too late, isn't it?
I hear diabolical laughter in the background....
Welcome to Never-Never Land.

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
It's time we pull out the 12 step for this Salty Pup.
Tunaholic 12 Step Program
Tunaholic Serenity Prayer:
”God grant me the serenity to accept the fact I cannot go out for tuna today, the courage to live another day without tuna, and the wisdom to know they will come again.”
12 Steps To Recovery
1) Put the poles down and slowly back away.
2) Stop hiding lures in various places thru out the house.
3) Never mistakenly call your spouse "Tuna" during lovemaking.
4) As hard as it is to believe, not everyone enjoys tuna fishing.
5) Selling your car in order to buy more gas to go tuna fishing is not recommended.
6) There are other fish in the sea, I think .
7) Leaving work daily to get home and accept packages from UPS/FedX is wrong.
8) No more telling your spouse the truck broke down while you were out fishing so you'll have to stay another day, or in extreme cases a week.
9) If extreme withdrawals have set in, for instance random "hook setting" while at work or home, or making the zzzzzzzzzzzz sound constantly, do not let the tunaholic near any fishing articles like magazines, fishing gear, or boats as that will make matters worse.
10) Tuna fishing is not a replacement for eating.
11) Unlike AA, recovery should be made away from other tunaholics. Gathering tunaholics will only create more problems.
12) It is not acceptable to miss your child's birth because you were out tuna fishing. (My wife told me that one)

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
Miss B Haven, drilling the two inch hole in the bottom is not the problem,it's making it water tight before you launch. If not done correctly you need a flatlander like me to sit there and bail water while you fish.
I have found that radio in need and will mount it this week.
Will make a run to Newport tomorrow AM just to see what the salt looks and taste like. Hope the wind stays down till noonish. May have to watch for some IFish stickers as I am without the radio. Guide me to a couple stinking silvers and a nook or two.
Sticking my neck out past those rocks will take a little getting use to for me. I get sick in the Willamette every time a canoe goes by to fast. I can hardle wait.

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
50 foot visibilty is pretty good... for TUNA WATER!
Man I hate the fog. Anybody ever see that movie "The Fog", scared the heck out of me. Not cause of the pirate ghosts, cause I kept thinking about being in a boat in that stuff.
Arggggggg...

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
What makes me Salty?
How about 4 years at sea...
And my first trip to the salt, with an ifisher, was the KING...
I think i am already a Salty Dog. But i need a boat.
I got home Sun. morn, and i hopped on the internet looking for a boat.
The wife says uh oh, no more sled, now you want an ocean boat, i said heck yeah...
And while i was out with PILAR, all i could think about was???
TUNA,TUNA,TUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: When does one become a SALTY DOG???
Big Tule, you are there. If anyone questions your grit, send em to me. Just the fact that you enjoyed our fishing adventure on 'Pilar' as much as you did, tells me all I need to know.
And by the way, Chris, you are welcome to join me on Pilar whenever I can find you a spot to sit.
Brad, thanks for the photo. I really, really like that photo.... gives me goosebumps every time I see it. I think it sums up all of what it means to pit your skills and knowledge against the elements.
When you sit in an open boat like the 'Uglygreen' many miles offshore you can feel that the ocean is a living thing.

Big Tule, let me check with my mate for August Halibut days. She has big plans for the little blue boat. Mostly for TUNA! I think.
