smelly jelly base material
Hi All,
Anyone know what the base is made from in Smelly Jelly like scents? the sticky kind? there must be something that is the unscented foundation to which the stinky bits are added, no?
Thanks
EK

Re: smelly jelly base material
Hoo, boy! This would be some cool information to obtain, but I would suspect it's more closely guarded than the formula for Coca-Cola, the secret to Zildjian cymbals or the combination to the lock on the door of the Carrot Milk Laboratory.
This stinky (albeit highly effective) goop is manufactured in Hillsboro, so maybe some surreptitious espionage. er, friendly inquiries might be in order. Perhaps a former employee (preferably disgruntled) would be willing to share some information.
In a similar vein, I've often wondered what it must be like to live in the vicinity of the Smelly Jelly factory on on days when they're cookin' up the more odorous scents like Crawdaddy.
In any event, thanks for opening the topic, El-Kabong ... this is sure to elicit some entertaining responses.

Re: smelly jelly base material
Smelly Jelly's base is an "FDA approved" substance according to the co. It is non-toxic and wont harm your skin. I've talked to their staff many times.

Re: smelly jelly base material
EK, you probably know this already but...
plain old vaseline makes a good base to hold whatever scent your imagination wants to whip up. Blenderized herring, mashed up sardine, whatever.
Super cheap and super easy to use.

SailCat:
I work four doors down from SmellyJelly. Yes, it stinks to high heaven sometimes, usually in the summer when our shop is open. You always know when a new batch is brewing. Doesn't smell too bad this time of year with all the doors shut though.
They are really great guys, so you won't catch me snooping around. They keep my father and I bought off with free samples.

Re: smelly jelly base material
I agree with using vaseline. Easy to use and you can find it almost anywhere. What I do is melt it in small batchs, add the chosen scent combos, pour off into the desired container and done deal.
You can also make it not as thick for cold weather applications, and some oils want to seperate during the cooling process, you just have to work with this instead of against it.

Re: smelly jelly base material
Anybody remember Charlie White, his awesome underwater salmon strike movies, and his bilge sludge experiments? Makes other petroleum products like Vaseline seem harmless and unlikely to turn the fish off.
Personally Smelly Jelly and Marie's products have worked for me. But if I had tons of surplus time to burn trying this and that and spending my precious spare time making enemies in my house brewing scents, deodorizing the blender, and trying to figure out what month-old homemade gunk is stinking up the garage fridge, I might be more interested in shooting for a superior product. Life's too short. I'd rather be on the river.

Zachary
I'm over in India right now and I haven't seen any buildings with a Team Carrot Milk sign or logo on it. Maybe it's located up north where travel is restricted. I'll be back home by March 12 ready to chase springers.
