After that I would have to go back to camp and change my shorts..

If you find that odd, you haven't bow hunted much.
Last week I called a bull elk into my buddy that walked straight in, over a rise and at 3' reached over to sniff him. It was a nice 6 point bull, and I wouldn't hunt those with a hammer. I scolded him good for not drawing sooner. The bull got right on top of him and he couldn't draw.
I have had cow elk close enough to spit on them dozens of times.

Actually I have taken a few elk and deer with a bow. Once spooked a cow that was so close she blew snot all over me. Another time I stalked then lept on the back of a doe that was bedded down. Altho it wasn't as bad as having a tiger by the tail, I still asked the same question, "Now what do I do"? I had my legs squeezing her flanks and my arms were around her neck with my head tucked in tightly to avoid her thrashing head. I rolled onto my back so that her legs were flailing air then pushed her downhill off of me. She ran off about twenty yards then spun around with a look on her face that said, "Don't you EVER do that to me again! And how the heck did you get so close?"
Out of the over 18,000 members of this forum, I imagine than fewer than a couple of dozen have had a big game animal come up to them within touching distance.

Re: If moose are this curious, I'd hunt'em with a hammer
It a pretty neat video, But......the "person" holding the bow is actually an maniquin, look at the hand holding the bow, white plastic and the grip looks funny for holding a bow in the wind. Plus his hair never moves in the wind. The guy filming it is in a blind 15' behind.
Moose are very curious. While guiding a couple of guys for Oregon a few years ago, we had a couple of cows come right up to us and my decoy, sniff around and actually touch noses with the decoys. They never spooked and eventually they allowed us to call in a bull. Nothing better that live "Decoys"
Cheers

Re: If moose are this curious, I'd hunt'em with a hammer
I had a pretty big bull at about 10 yds. while I was archery hunting elk down here in Utah this year. I was def. way more scared of him than he was of me. He just stood there and we locked eyes for about 2 min. until I backpeddled out of there. Once I was about 20+ yds away he just put his head down and started feeding again. That was the first moose I had ever seen in the woods and those things are HUGE!!!!

Re: If moose are this curious, I'd hunt'em with a hammer
a few years ago my cousin and i were calling in a herd of elk and ended up bringing the cows within about 5 ft. of me. they decided that they were going to bed down right there in front of me. we sat on that herd for over 2 hours trying to get he satellite bulls to come down off of the ridge that was about 600 yards above us. waited until it started to get dark then decided that it wasn't going to happen so i picked up a rock and tagged one in in the backside. man it was cool to watch the whole herd of cows take off up that hill.

I am not so sure it is a mannequin. Watch the first two seconds. The head of the guy holding the bow moves slightly while the body does not. The hand does look very white but I still think it is a real guy.

Re: If moose are this curious, I'd hunt'em with a hammer
i had a cow elk get almost that close that close to me about 6yrs ago in the trask unit general rifle bull season. she didn't nuzzle my muzzle (ha that rhymes) but she wasn't much more than an arms length away before she decided that she didn't want anything to do with me, turned and wandered away. it was the first time i had ever seen an elk that close and i about messed myself. i had heard stories of cow mooses charging ppl and i durn near shot her out of self preservation, but i was more worried about finding the rest of the herd and hopefully my first bull so i froze. admittedly i suffer from buck fever but you don't know the shakes until youre eye to eye, and can feel it breathing on your face as they're trying to smell you with a 700lb animal that can't make heads or tails of you.

No way, no how I wanna be that close to a cow moose and her calf. Meaner than a griz, and runs faster too!

Re: If moose are this curious, I'd hunt'em with a hammer
Had to share my peach once with a big 4x4 mule deer leaning on my back trying to get closer for a bit - dumb deer!
Rifle hunting for a bull sitting in the middle of a bunch of cows many times - always had the wrong tag. Poked one with my gun barrel when I got bored and it was time to go find more of them - boy did that cow go straight up or what - hoof's were peeling rubber when she hit the ground - dirt flying, barking. Should have heard the guys in a truck a couple hundred yards away when 60 elk almost trampled over their truck on the landing - talk about funny.
Cow Moose with a calf - nope not for me
